This book was a female version of “The Talented Mr Ripley”

There's a lot to like about this book (I LOVE a good unreliable narrator) but, ultimately, the material isn't original enough to warrant a higher rating (this is, as other reviewers have noted, just a remix of [b:The Talented Mr. Ripley|2247142|The Talented Mr. Ripley (Ripley, #1)|Patricia Highsmith|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1435426615s/2247142.jpg|1817520]), and the structure doesn't leave any big or shocking reveals (in my opinion). E. Lockhart can be SO funny when she wants to be, and I've missed her humor in her recent YA thrillers. That said, I will be able to recommend this book to my students with success, and it's a winner for what it is--suspenseful YA thrills in a quick-to-read (re: short) package.

i read this when i was in middle school. i remember being very confused. i must’ve missed some important lines or something

SLJ warned me, but I did it anyway: Definitely don't get the audiobook, the narrator can't do accents at all and a few parts are almost unlistenable because of it. As reviews have said, the opener is a real breathless action movie scene, but the story downshifts from there, explaining events in reverse. Think it will be an easy sell for booktalks, but didn't personally love it. Interested to hear kid opinions!

I'm scratching my head about why this book was ever published. It doesn't do anything new, it isn't interesting, and the characters are all 100% unlikeable.

I'm pretty sure I've read this book before, or maybe seen the movie. It was entertaining enough, but not original.

The story opens at chapter 18 with Jules, or maybe Imogene luxuriating at a resort in Mexico. It hops back by weeks to unravel the mystery, except it's more the how's that are answered than the what's and why's.

This wasn't really for me. I found it hard to buy into or care much about the characters which is what this really hinges on.

what - and i cannot stress this enough - the FUCK, was happening in this book?

the timeskips made no sense, i thought there'd be maybe one, two, three flashbacks and then back to the present but no. it just keeps going farther back until you're lost completely.
as for the plot,,, no comment bc i have no god damn clue what was happening.
the "plot twist" was garbage + i could see it coming from a mile away and the characters were boring as hell.

really disappointing, seeing as how much i loved we were liars
