Boyfriend Material

Recently, I've had a similar conversation with several friends: The world is too much and we just need escapism, so we've turned to romance novels, because they are fluff.

Boyfriend Material is somewhat delightful fluff; enough that I do want to immediately find Husband Material, so I can see where Luc and Oliver go from here.

Also: Oliver's parents ARE TERRIBLE.

I enjoyed this and it was a good no thoughts just love vibe. I do wish the characters were a bit more flushed out. Also docked an entire star because
there’s nothing I hate more than a third act breakup.
that being said I’ll probably read the next one.

I really enjoyed the dynamic and depth of the main characters in this book. Their romance felt so natural and sparked off so quickly you couldn't help but root for them. The comedy and wit in this book was also fun and kept you on your toes, though I do think it felt like it leaned more comedy than romance at some times. Overall I really liked it!

A BOOK FOR ALL THE TRAUMATISED GAYS WHO HATE TALKING ABOUT THEIR FEELINGS (I FEEL SO VALIDATED)

omg it’s been a while since i wrote a lengthy review but i have a lot of feelings about this book!

i so so badly wanted to give this five stars and most of the book i was utterly convinced i would but unfortunately towards the end it did drag on a bit for me which unfortunately made it boring to me.
i’m not criticizing that there was other plot or scenes that didn’t centre around the relationship but it’s like it worked for the majority of the book and all of sudden i felt like it was drawn out. and like the chemistry between them was first properly developed towards the end of the book which made me feel like something was missing and the pay off could have been more satisfying.

this was a shame since i spent most of the book absolutely devouring it LIKE I COULD. NOT. PUT. IT. DOWN i was reading it everywhere on the bus or just after finishing my shift at work it had such a hold on me. and that is why despite the small criticism i just made of it i would rather spend this review gushing about all the things i liked because it’s genuinely such a great book in so many ways.

- the characters were so fucking relatable and real it meant everything to me to see them portrayed in their full messiness and that they were so wonderfully human. i ADORED how this book explored so many facets of being in a relationship in all its wonderful chaos it was so validating to read a book so explicitly queer but where being queer wasn’t the main plot also both mcs are out and proud from the get go which was so refreshing

- as a person with childhood trauma experiences of my own luc’s storyline was everything to me and I love how he took charge of his own feelings and made his own decisions about what he wanted from his father and what he didn’t want. also seeing the inner struggle of dealing with a family member being sick and whether you want anything to do with them when they spent so much time mistreating you, was everything to me.

- i went into this expecting a lighthearted romcom which in many ways it was and i fucking love me a romcom but i am awestruck by the angst and the character development and just how profound it was in the way it represented so many relatable issues like the angst had me screaming my head off in the best way possible.

- SUCH A DELICIOUS RENDITION OF THE FAKE DATING TROPE OH MY GOD like it had me kicking my feet twirling my hair and giggling so hard because they were so touchy and painfully in love while maintaining the will they/won’t they aspect, the tension was absolutely spot on and intoxicating

- the humour and just how wonderfully fucking british it was was fucking delightful i laughed out loud so many times and i really cherish how a book that made me feel so much pain also managed to spark so much fun. A+ writing

- THE TENSION OH MY GODDDDDD it made me feel so lightheaded it was as though I was on fucking fire

- I LOVE IT WHEN THE PEOPLE IN A SHIP CHASE EACH OTHER AND BOY WAS I IN FOR A TREAT LIKE STANDING IN THE RAIN DECLARING YOUR FEELINGS WILL NEVER NOT GET ME JUST LIKE I’M A MESS BUT I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU WILL YOU STILL HAVE ME WILL ALWAYS GET ME

- THE QUEER SIDE CHARACTERS AAAAAAH IT MADE MY HEART SING how many different queer people and relationships and facets of being queer are represented in this book, the side characters really made this book also the silly straight ones

- I GENUINELY WANT TO RIP MY HAIR OFF MY HEAD I CAN’T DEAL WITH HOW IN LOVE AND YET COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS AND STUPID THESE FUCKERS ARE

- i want to read 25374737 because oh boy i was having the time of my life and i’m excited to see what i think of the sequel since i’ve heard mixed opinions about it.
emotional funny hopeful informative

I liked the story a lot for the majority of it. The MC was interesting and the POV immersive, though sometimes it felt there was just too much fuff and clutter from side characters who didn't have any other purpose but to be funny and add padding. What I was hoping wouldn't happen was the mandatory romcom separation before the happy end, but there it was. It felt jarring and showed how the LI just wasn't quite developed enough to really sell this plot point to me, especially when I already knew to expect it miles away since it's the formula. At that point, I lost interest in the story, but finished it anyway.

DID NOT FINISH: 1%

I had a hard time with the language—it's a little too simple for me, and the tone was off-putting.

I HATE YOU GRAND GESTURES I HATE YOU THIRD ACT BREAKUPS. Please, can we take these plot devices out back and shoot them? This book has multiple breakups and multiple grand gestures, please kill me. Regardless, it was good. It was funny. Somehow, despite everything I hate. Like how Luc was such a cancer, it was obvious, and then when he said he had a July birthday, I cackled. He was so annoying but also somehow tolerable. And Oliver, who has the personality of pretty much every male love interest in every contemporary romance novel. The standard, one size fits all personality was still entertaining. I can say that the average romance enjoyer would love this book to the moon. I am not them.
