Oof. I finally started on this classic manga after hearing so much about it and how it inspired some of my favorite media such as Elden Ring. I can see how the artist inspired many with his art style - I have never read a maga as pain-stakingly drawn as this one. Though there is a suprising amounts of sidekick-driven humor spread throughout, don't expect a light hearted read - this is HEAVY, including extreme violence, serious underlying themes, sexual assault, and a tragic character backstory. But underneath it all it seems that author seeks to convey a tentative hopefulness - though all seems grim and lost, there is still love and light in the world. I'm looking forward to see more of Guts' journey.

Berserk is from what I can tell, generally agreed upon as the godfather of dark fantasy, and set the tone for years to come. After being told by so many that the first couple books of volumes weren't even that good, I was absolutely blown away. You can tell the story is progressing and evolving, the dive into guts' mysterious upbringing at the end was incredible, and each full page and double page panels are absolute works of art you will linger on to soak in every detail. I'm so excited to continue with this series and see where it goes.
