Very solid. It starts off leading you down on path but reveals quite a few different options about our characters. It ends on a cliff hanger but it's volume 1 out of...many, for a reasons that doesn't finish. It's a rather enthralling read. Guts is a character to ponder. Neither openly good, not evil, not bad, but conflicted. Miura wants you to believe we're watching an Anti-hero, but begins to unravel the threads of the tropes as the book progresses and has absolutely gorgeous artwork, even as it revels in violence and bloodshed, it is beautifully drawn and rendered. A sad state of affairs is to know that Berserk may never know completion with the passing of Kentaro Mirua earlier this year, it has hooked me but I am satisfying having read what I have read and knowing this pleases me, even with my unanswered questions. I am amazed and enthralled and while I want to know more, I will be patient and see where it takes me next.

This is easily my favorite manga I've read. What captured me the most was the atmosphere and emotional depth. It is a bleak medieval setting, and the big pages along with the detailed and stunning artwork make it even more immersive.
Guts starts out in the story as a brute, but you slowly learn that there is something deeply human beneath his exterior. He has great determination—he keeps going no matter how broken he gets.
The story is full of violence and horror, but it's not just for shock value. It accurately represents the cruelty of the world and how fear has shaped its people.
I’m very intrigued and want to keep reading, but I do not own any of the next volumes. I want to know more about Griffith, and the last page is a huge cliffhanger!
