I am in love with Callender's writing and how they approach topics that most writers would shy away from discussing. Felix Ever After follows a transgender male (demiboy) and his high school life. The story is complex as he searches for his identity and acceptance due to a bullying incident at school and his complicated relationship with his dad and best friend. I thought it did a nice job of explaining intersectionality and the struggle those who are not white gay males experience as a person of color and transgender.

The first thing I have to say is that I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to read this book because I LOVED IT so much.

Tw: cyber-bullying, transphobia, being outed

I own this book as a physical copy but I really just wanted to listen to it on audio and I'm so glad I did because I love the narrator, Logan Rozos. I know that Kacen has mentioned on their website that they talked with their publisher and went and removed the HP references out of the print copies -- while they were still in the audio (they were at the beginning) once I passed it, it was kind of out of sight out of mind.

I loved Felix so much. Felix Love, who wants to know love but needs to learn that he is worthy of love first. Felix is such a loveable character and he's so proud of all of his identities and is not afraid to be himself, and I love that for him. I was constantly finding myself laughing and Felix's inner monologue too and even some of the things he said to his friends. He's so funny. There were a few times I wanted to deck his father though because it's really not hard to try for your child, and in the end his dad did finally call him by his name and it made me want to cry.

  •  “But, just because we loved each other, doesn't mean we were meant to be together.
And just because you loved one, doesn't mean you can't love another.”

I loved all of the side characters in this story (except two) and I feel like they brought so much to it. Found family means so much and in the climate we're currently in having people around you that love you and would do literally anything for you is life changing. There are many tough parts in the book to read, but I think they're necessary. Marisol and Austin can catch these hands though. Marisol for the reason her and Felix broke up, and Austin for dead naming and sharing pre transition photos of Felix. That is NEVER okay and I did want to punch him in the throat for that.

I really want to go back and reread/annotate this book. It's instantly one of my new favorites and I will be yelling at all of my friends to read it.

“No one else gets to define who I am. Only me.”

the story of self identity and the imperfect characters really made this book for me

Wow, just fucking wow. At the start of this i wanted to shake Felix out of his shell, out of feeling like he took up space and no one was interested in him, but then slowly he started to do that himself. I wanted to just hug Felix and show the all the love that was around, and kick the shit of the awful TERF in his friend group. We need more characters like Felix, we need more book like Felix Ever After. Kacen Callender has wowed me with every book they have written!

This was a really lovely book. I liked our MC Felix. He might not have been making the best judgment calls and decisions throughout but he is a teenager, doing teenager things. There were a lot of moving moments around queer identity and selfdiscovery, and one particular scene at the end made me even tear up.
The one thing I found quite jarring were the many Harry Potter references in the first half of the book. Apparently these have fortunately been removed in the physical and ebook versions, but they are still present in the audiobook that I listened too. So just a headsup for audiobook readers.
