This book was very interesting. At first, I was always thinking of Laura Bush and wondering, "Did that really happen to her?" I looked her up on Wiki and found out some things did happen, but after a while I forgot about her and just focused on the characters in the book. I didn't like Charlie at all and was pissed that she married (and stayed married) to him. She was so different from him on so many levels and I really felt like he held her back from being who she truly was. I know all too well how jerks can be appealing, but his family alone would drive me to drink. Eesh.
Good character development. A tad slow at times but well written. Enjoyed this book.
The author spent a lot of time on Alice's life prior to Charlie and then early on with Charlie. I felt like the last part -- current day, if you will -- came too quickly and was very rushed... and also needlessly wordy. The real events, especially the recent ones, were distracting. The author could have done more to make the story Alice's. And the Andrew stuff was really annoying.
All in all, I think this book was more about what we -- meaning feminist liberals -- want Laura Bush to be rather than facts. It also comes off a little condescending somehow.

So, the American Wife of the title is superficially Laura Bush, and metaphorically the American people. I still had a hard time understanding that wife's (either us or Laura's) attraction to the obnoxious bastard that was our president. The book started out strong, finished strong, at times went on too long --I was often startled that we were still on a day that had begun chapters earlier. Still, all in all, a hell of a book.
Picked up at a used bookstore. A year or two ago, someone recommended it to me on a plane and I've been curious ever since.
This was a very good and fun book, I really like the way curtis writes, i also really loved "Prep".
It's been 84 years...since I started reading this book (well, it felt like it, anyhow). I found the first third of this book really interesting and I was bored by the rest of it. It could have EASILY (and should have) been about 200 pages shorter.
What an amazing book! The characters were so well written - there were things I both loved and hated about them. I couldn’t recommend it more
I just finished reading American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld. It was really interesting to read it and think of Laura Bush in a way that I never really thought about her. The character is not actually named Laura Bush, but there are many parallels to Laura Bush's life and the character's husband is President during the Bush years. I loved the first 3 sections detailing her life before the presidency the most, but overall, it was a really enjoyable read.
