cannot recommend more- one of my all time favorite reads. vivid, precise, emotional- down to every sentence and image. the story is deeply painful, yet there is something healing about Machado telling it. it is so meaningful. As much as she analyzes and intellectually maps her story onto larger themes around queerness, relationships, and abuse, she tells it with such personal vulnerability, such messy complexity. not a word is out of place. every structural element of this book is ,,, wow!
hard to read at times... Machado rejects the idea that something intellectual has to be dehumanizing, and i love that. i am beyond grateful for this book, for Machado’s sentences. on a writing level, story level, person level - i am in awe of Machado and her work.

“A la gente le encantan las ideas, aunque no sepan qué hacer con ellas. Aunque solo sepan hacer justo lo que no deben”.

…”Eso no solo puede ocurrir, sino que probablemente ocurrirá, porque el mundo está lleno de gente herida que hace daño a los demás. Que la cultura dominante te considere una anomalía no quiere decir que no puedas ser común, tan común como una puta mierda.”

heartbreaking and raw. all of those metaphors were beautiful and felt as if they were at a perfect place during the story ( where you needed them to be). the use of second person narratives was good too.
the writing was beautiful and poetic and it was nicely done, so much so that halfway through the book, I forgot it was a memoir and realised it only during the last pages which felt more gut wrenching. im glad the author is happy now.
