It was okay but confusing.
The story switched between the grandmother and Eleanor
sometimes so that confused me. At the end they threw in
that Eleanor is actually the first Rhys but reincarnated
which wasn’t talked about outside of a single sentence.

This book had a lot of promise and it wasn't bad, but also it definitely felt like the reader couldn't be trusted to put things together. I also feel like arthur being a romance thing w/ the mc was shoehorned in abruptly from the beginning and would have been more interested in it minus that aspect.

This has to be most convoluted book I ever read about. I liked maybe last 5-6 chapters but this book was so slow.
What I did like was cover and gothic atmosphere.

First zero star of the year? Yup.
This was tough to get through. A ton of half baked ideas and no real characterization. Eleanor, the MC, is whiny, brainless, and annoying beyond words. I listened to the audiobook and maybe the narrator made it worse because her voice was very whiny. She is a 17 year old child whose grandmother put her in charge as she was dying-- after having exiled her earlier in her life, without explanation, knowing she didn't remember much of her childhood and had no real connection to her family. A child is now "in charge" of her elder grandfather, and her father and mother? Hokay!!! No one has any real goals, including Eleanor, and no one is believable. There are plenty of other faults (like Eleanor's crush on a 95 year old thrall zombie 😬😬😬 who has no freewill of his own-- and it's not really even explained why everyone in the family wants to have sex with this zombie outside of "well your gay grandfather and grandmother had sex with him so now we all want to"???????) but I won't get into them. Oof.

I finally finished it at 2.5* speed and it was a *chore*. All of these ideas could have been really well executed but they just fell flat without any real monster building.

If you like supernatural horror, skip this, it falls flat on its face. I wouldn't be surprised to learn this was a booktok book because there's literally no meat to it, just a cool hook to reel you in way. Ignore it, find something else.

2.5 stars. I was entertained but I don’t understand the ending. And I don’t think they ever explained what the mother was. She was first described as sitting in a barrel at the table which made me first think it was the second book in a series. When I learned that was wrong I started to be intrigued to no avail. I still have no clue what kind of creature she is. Anyone know? Something made up? Also what kind of creatures were Eleanor and Grandmere with their eating people and orange blood?

This was an interesting book for me because it has all the elements that I should love but I kinda hated it for a good chunk of the book and I wasn't sure why. Fortunately I found the ending to be satisfying enough that it boosted my enjoyment and I almost feel like I might like it more on a second read now that I know what I'm getting myself into but sadly my first read was a little disappointing.
