I enjoyed this novel!

It was useful that I read Nobody’s Normal by Roy Richard Grinker earlier this year. I learned from that book to be more aware of the relationship between time, place, and mental health . For example, diagnoses such as neurasthenia and shell shock were popular during WWI.

The electric shock scene was very distressing to read. It felt like torture, but it was "working"? Rivers had a tough reflection after that chapter. Some of my favorites parts of the book were his reflections. He is right that is job was not to heal his patients, but to get them in the condition to return to war. War was the reason they were his patients in the first place.

Both a compassionate and brutal exploration of the effects of war on mental health, "Regeneration" treats Sassoon, Owen and their peers with humanity and understanding.

Barker's prose is sparse, so when something truly impactful and reflective comes along, it knocks you for six.

A gorgeous book. I would love to explore the rest of the trilogy.

3.5 stars, rounded up since I appreciated the craftsmanship. However, it's a book about the horrors of war and the mental toll it takes on soldiers, and attempts to repair (or regenerate) those soldiers to return to the fight or be sent home. It's hard to "like" a story with such a premise, since the idea of it is pretty devastating.
