All of us have read about how a soldier returns home victoriously after a hard and long war. What we do not hear about is after the "Happily Ever After".

This book is an attempt to analyse those psychological effects that the World War I had on the soldiers. It revolves around the various treatment methods undertaken at military hospitals. The protagonist is a decorated war hero who was sent to one such place after he announced that he will no longer fight. Some of the events are described in excruciating details which accurately portrays the various horrors faced by the valiant men, enough to chill the bones and gain a renewed respect for them.

Review - I did love how at least some of the characters are very real, and that their works are known the world over - Sassoon, Owen and Graves are notable examples. It added something tangible and almost touchable to the story. It is at times confusing. I do think, however, that the idea of shell shock could have been gone into more thoroughly, along with the reasons behind Sassoon's protest. Overall, though, a good read.
