Lovely coming of age adventure story.

I really enjoyed the MCs and the whole host of side characters. I felt the adventure/mystery was a little tell and not show but hey, still fun!

Good, low stakes read. You can't really go wrong with FT Lukens.

I thought this was a cute story overall!
I was a little sad once I finished that Pirates weren't as prevalent as the synopsis made it seem. The only other things I wasn't a huge fan about was the dialogue (at times it felt unnatural) and some of the secondary characters (they felt a little flat).
If your looking for a short, cute, quick read I would give this a try!

It’s a sweet queer book :) Didn’t love the plot though, thought it would be more pirate themed than it was, and more mysterious. Felt kind of boring to me, but if I had been younger I think I would have enjoyed it more. So it’s a great teenager book!

Is this book perfect? No. The pacing is somewhat weird at times, the author's strength isn't writing action scenes so they can come off as confusing and many characters can feel somewhat overwhelming.

However, this novel is simply wonderful. It has a fairly simple premise that is easy to get in to, a soothing writing style, fun main characters and above all it has love.
And when novels like these exist, with the characters loving one another and doing things out of love for others. Why, tell me why, are YA novels like Six of Crows where everyone is horrible and LGTBQ+ is hamfisted in topping the charts?

In Deeper Waters is a wonderfully queer novel that little queer me would have devoured if it came out when I was a teen. Wonderful story from beginning to end. A good opening, solid ending and overall a fun experience!
I'm looking forward to read more of Lukens, because they know what they're doing; writing LGBTQ+ stories with love, tenderness and kindness in them but not shying away from action, drama and resolve.

4.5/5

pretty good book! it lacked the high stakes adventure gentlemans guide esque thing i was hoping for and the romance was a bit sudden and insta-lovey which i don't like. i also completely misjudged how the romance was gonna play out when i first saw the blurb but all the characters were great, it was honestly just writing style and small stuff about the plot that i didnt like

CUTE I LOVE THEM!!!
