  • Loves: The strange boy who treats the Prince like an equal and a friend (but it’s only okay when he does it)! The royal, political intrigue and mysteries! The magic system! It’s so cool!

  • Dislikes: … uhh, the reveals felt clunky? I liked a lot of details in this book. The end didn’t quite stick the landing, but it was like a wobble, not even a full step off from perfect for me.

Overall, I love the characters in this story and the tangled web of royal problems that they must navigate. I wish there was more development of the other royal siblings because they each have such different motivations and personalities. Prince Tal and Athlen (the strange boy *cough*merman*cough*) have such a sweet relationship that was a bit of insta-love, but developed with time and trauma that made it feel less like a trope. They save each other and they can be equals at the end, so I dig it.

This took me a bit longer to warm up to. Plot as well as characters didn't hook me right away, but I grew to love them. I think, the narrator's voice for Athlen especially (as well as Shay) got in the way of liking him, in addition to his seemingly dubious character in the beginning. Both him and Tal are a strange mix of quite young and pretty mature, which sometimes took me a little out of the story. I did appreciate the sometimes very poetic and sincere moments, as well as the overall story arc. The "twist" at the most dramatic point of the story made sense, but wasn't as satisfying as it could have been of Tal would be the one to go all the way through with whatever the thing would have looked like (being vague for the sake of not spoiling the plot).
Overall I enjoyed the story as a cute, mostly light phantasy audiobook :)

DNF at 45% There is nothing wrong with this book or story, but it felt like it was written for a much younger audience than your average YA story. And that could be because this story is just very sweet. There is not an issue with that, I think I am just used to reading high fantasy at a higher level with more world building and complexity within the story. In Deeper Waters was more like a nostalgic fairy tale told for a younger audience. I think this will be a great book for someone looking for a queer romance and/or who is just starting to dip their toes into the fantasy genre. I may return to this story again at a later date.
