DNF at 45% There is nothing wrong with this book or story, but it felt like it was written for a much younger audience than your average YA story. And that could be because this story is just very sweet. There is not an issue with that, I think I am just used to reading high fantasy at a higher level with more world building and complexity within the story. In Deeper Waters was more like a nostalgic fairy tale told for a younger audience. I think this will be a great book for someone looking for a queer romance and/or who is just starting to dip their toes into the fantasy genre. I may return to this story again at a later date.

The end-spurt was a bit too long for my taste, otherwise great:)

Cute and fun with an abundance of magic. The character arcs were predictable but that didn't make it any less adorable!

In Deeper Waters is a Young Adult High Fantasy Romance standalone novel.

IDW is a The Little Mermaid retelling, but I think it puts a nice spin to the original story, and no I don't mean that this is a queer romance lol. I'll do my best not to spoil what I mean, but here I go, the story follows Tal, or Prince Taliesin of Harth, and he has a secret that most in his mother's kingdom doesn't know about, and that is he has magic. Once it was revealed in front of his family, he was forced to go into hiding, and a lie was put out that he was just a sickly child, but now he's sixteen years old and it's time for his coming of age tour, and is not looking forward to it at all, mostly because he fears his magic going out of control, no matter how much training he received to, well, control it, and he's descendant of a grandfather who was both magic and a tyrant. So great times, obviously lol. Who'd have thought the first thing he encounters on his tour out at sea is a sinking ship on fire and a young man chained within. However, after saving and freeing him, this other boy, Athlen, jumps ship as soon as possible, disappearing from Tal's life, or so he thought. Bumping into him suddenly at the next spot of Tal's tour, he once again helps Athlen out, buying medicine for a friend of his. From there, one of the fears Tal had about people learning about his magic just happens one after the other. From attempted assassination, kidnapping, and forced labor that would force him to use his magic under duress, as proof that he has it. This story had me at the edge of my seat, but if you asked me how cozy the story was compared to another story by the same author, I'd say a 2 out of 5 in the cozy scale. Besides the romance, which is slow burn in my opinion, despite this story being shorter than I thought, there's political intrigue, threats of war, and harrowing pasts. By the last act, I was crying my eyes out! I love Tal and Athlen, and their blossoming romance was a great palette cleanser after all the horrible that happened to Tal for the first half of the book. If you're looking for something fun, sweet, and just a great fantasy ride, pick this story up, it's just the one book, and I think everything ties up wonderfully by the end.

This book was brilliant. Tal leaves the only thing he's ever known, the inside of the castle walls on his coming-of-age tour. Which is an absolute disaster. Two days in and they find something unusual. Which sends him on a perilous journey uncovering things about himself and his kingdom that he'd never known. I loved the way Athnel's movements are described so you know something is weird about him, but you don't know what exactly. Tal definitely proved himself. Everyone worried he would be either used or killed for something he literally has little control over and he showed them they don't have to worry. He can hold his own. The ending! God that ending was stunning. I loved every second of him becoming the man he was always meant to be and finally being comfortable in his own skin. The hot boyfriend definitely helps.
