This was very cartoonish and cheesy, but in a fun way. I did feel like there were a few too many characters to try to keep track of imo, and none of them especially memorable. The pacing went to pot as we started jumping around a lot towards the end; the last 100 or so pages honestly felt like they should have been the start to a second book.

Still, this was an entertaining, easy-breezy read and I intend to keep going with the series for now as I'm pretty curious to see what comes next!

I was sucked in from the first page! Towards the end I did find it hard to shift to other POVs but I hope my library opens so I can read the next!

The book's plot is a little unevenly written. In the introduction the author describes it as a yarn, an unplanned tale. It's an accurate description. The story starts off great. Pug reminds me of Fitz from the Assassin's Apprentice. That's how the story begins, from the preteen youth of this young lad becoming somewhat of a hero.

This book has been revised and updated to fit lore from other book series. At some point I noticed the prose changed. Why would the sorcerer use modern concepts and words such as "Space Time" or "Axiomatic". That unsettled me and made me wonder if the changes were necessary. At some point, a particular mining tunnel named "Glory Hole" had me reconsider that there should have been even more revisions.

Beyond that, the rest of the book was fine. Up until the final chapters there are cliffhangers without any trace or hints to explain certain situations. That also felt unprofessional. It's a debut book and yes it has flaws. A pretty good debut nonetheless.

If you’re looking for a classic journey with dwarves and elves and dragons and magic this is it.

By the numbers medieval fantasy/D&D story/colonial narrative. The next book may subvert some of the tropes present in this one, but I'm not engaged enough to continue.
