funny hopeful medium-paced

Contains spoilers! This is my review of Beach Read by Emily Henry, the first book of hers I’ve read. I wasn’t sure where to start, but people recommended this one since it’s where her interconnected world begins, with Easter eggs that appear in later books. I really enjoyed it. It was the perfect holiday read — I didn’t have it on the beach, but by the pool, which felt just as fitting.
The story follows January and Gus, two writers who are both struggling to finish their next books. They start off as rivals with a bit of an enemies-to-lovers dynamic, and both face a deadline to complete their manuscripts by the end of summer. To spark inspiration, they decide to swap genres and challenge each other to write outside their usual style. The creative experiment not only gets their writing flowing but also deepens their connection — in more ways than one.
I thought both characters were well developed and easy to root for. Their chemistry felt natural, and their personal growth made the romance even more satisfying. There were also several twists I didn’t see coming, which kept the story fresh.
The only aspect that pulled me out a little were the heavy American cultural references — foods, drinks, and songs I wasn’t familiar with. It’s a small thing, and completely understandable since it’s a US-set book by an American author, but at times it broke my immersion.
Overall, I loved the writing style, the banter, and especially the way it was told from January’s perspective. As someone who has tried (and failed) to write a book myself, I really connected with the struggles of creative block. Both January and Gus also grapple with deeper family issues, and the way they helped each other through those made the story feel even more heartfelt.
Beach Read was funny, emotional, and romantic — I can definitely see why it’s a fan favourite, and it made me want to pick up more of Emily Henry’s books right away.

3.5
slow-paced

seriously thorough rom com

This book manages to bend the genre of “woman’s lit” so exceedingly well. It is serious and thoughtful, with a pair of sexy protagonists that you love in a romance.

I enjoyed it immensely.
