A group of six kids find themselves being tracked by people who want to collect them. All because they are irregularities, or cryptids, aliens, mythical creatures. They have formed their own family and during their journey they meet more irregularities. An amazing story of made-family, friends, myths, and so much more.

I loved this book a lot and wanted to give it five stars but it is unfortunate about the reptilian kid because I don't think it was intentional but it is a problem when you use the reptilian aliens disguised as humans taking over the government thing in your story.

Cross-posted from my blog where there's more information on where I got my copy and links and everything. https://lainahastoomuchsparetime.wordpress.com/2025/04/14/things-ive-read-recently-179-more-graphic-novels/
Oh, I adored this. This is one of those books where I put it on a list and then forgot everything I ever knew about it, so when it showed up, I didn’t know what it was about at all. I also know exactly who I would recommend this to. It’s queer found family with D&D vibes. It is delightful and I loved it so much.
I was also surprised by the queer rep, but it was a very pleasant surprise. I was reading along, got over a hundred pages in, and it suddenly went from queer coded to queer representation. There was a really cute little conversation about nonbinary identities and pronouns, and it was really great to see that in a middle grade book.
The kids are also just awesome. Maggie is the cutest thing especially, but I loved all of them and how much they cared about each other and took care of each other. I also appreciated the backstories they showed, and how the kids talked about their trauma from being forcibly taken from their families and homes, often resulting in the deaths of their families, and how seriously it was taken, without being too scary for kids. It’s very thoughtful and well-done.
Ten out of ten, would absolutely recommend this. And I think this would appeal to both middle grade readers and teen readers! Editing Note: The kids at my local library LOVE this book. It’s super popular.
Representation: The kids come from all over the world. One of them is nonbinary and another is nonverbal, which I thought was a cool touch.
Content notes: There’s some violence and even some death. I don’t think it’s overly graphic but it is there.

Families come in all forms. The family at the center of this graphic novel with an appealing color scheme and gorgeous artwork is made up of 6 "irregulars" who have unique powers, characteristics, and origin stories. At the start of the story, the location where they are living under the radar is compromised. When they attempt to move to a new location, they get into even more trouble when they realize that an agent who is supposed to be protecting them is the one leading them to danger. Thus, their need to set out on their own to find a place where they can belong, be free and be safe. The characters they meet along the way show us that even when you feel alone or like an outsider, there are people we connect with all around us, near and far.

More than perhaps any other graphic novel I've ever read, this felt like I was transported into a fantastic movie or TV show. The combination of well-paced plot, fabulous art style, and compelling characters made this into a magically immersive experience I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who loves found family, road-trip adventures, quality characterization, diversity & gender discovery, and/or stakes that propel the plot throughout.
Each of the 6 kids felt distinct, and I appreciated that each one used their powers at different points to help everyone along. The relationship dynamics between each of the kids felt so real and varied across their ages (ranging from 6 to 16), something that can be hit or miss with many ensemble cast books. There were great conversations in here about accepting who you are, finding strength from within as well as from your tribe, and learning what makes you different is exactly what makes you special. The Collector was mysterious and well-rendered – his scheming lurking over the sweet moments of the kids trying to make it on their escape added a perfect amount of ominous foreboding. Though this is marked as middle grade, I (clearly) had a wonderful time reading it as an adult, as would most people who enjoy the tropes and vibes listed above.
Since I checked this out from the library, I absolutely plan to purchase my own copy, and I look forward to re-reading it this fall to get into the cozy season mood. ◡̈
