Not my favorite - a little much with the "grotesque"...

An overheard conversation between siblings about murde. A sinsiter matriarch who has a strange form of control over her family. A trip into the desert, and a death at the red palace of Petra...

I really enjoyed this book. Unlike the last Hercule Poirot novel I read, this time the narratve focuses on the Boyntons and the other tourists who are visiting Petra. There are only a few scenes from Herecule's point of view at the beginning, and then he doesn't reenter the story until after Mrs. Boynton is dead.

I did not correctly guess who the killer was at all. I was sorry that Lady Westholme, who was terrorized by Mrs. Bonyton when she was a prison warden, ended up commiting suicide after her murder was uncovered. Literally none of the characters were upset that the old lady had been murdered and there was not enough evidence to convict Lady Westholme regardless.

Another one of Christie's brilliant plots surrounding a very curious family with an overbaring, sadist head figure.

Everyone dislikes Mrs. Boynton - even Poirot himself - and no one is really shocken nor sad, when she dies. However, things get heated up when Poirot and his colleagues discover that the woman must have been murdered.

Thus, a very interesting, sometimes confusing and very complex "hunt" for the murderer starts and people may not be who or what they pretend to be in the first place.
