Do not be intimidated by the size of this book, it's worth it and very few words are wasted. This story took turns I was not anticipating yet were necessary and better than I would have imagined. Mr. Wendig, I am a fan!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it. I listened to it versus read it which gave it a performance feel and got me very interested. This was my first Wendig novel as well and I jive with his writing style quite a lot. Occasionally I felt like there were too many similes and too much description. I agree with other reviewers that the middle dragged on a bit with scenes that I found myself mentally editing out of the book. He absolutely could have gotten to the point much more quickly. All that aside, I still loved this book!

I didn't know what I was getting into. It turned out to be one of my favorite books. Supernatural is a genre I don't typically read and didn't know that's what this was about.
Wendig is a great writer. It's one thing I look for in books. Every character is written distinctly. But the thing I really enjoyed is that he ties everything together, even the smallest details. (I hate when authors don't wrap up everything and even forget what they wrote).
This is a long book, and one that I thoroughly enjoyed spending hours getting lost in.
Fair warning: it's dark. Intense. Violent. It has complicated family issues with abuse; serial killer and also a tight family that loves and cares for each other and friendships.

🦉How far would you go?🦉
Listen.
5 stars is not enough.
I've mentioned before I love to go into a book blindly, read the back cover and ignore the hell out of the reviews, that way I'm not swayed with good/bad and/or spoiled. This is one that I highly recommend you to go in blindly, and of course, bring a pen and paper to take notes.
We follow a family not really mourning the loss of the grandpa, more like celebrating. And while Nathan wanted nothing to do with his pops, the man left him his house, which he also wanted nothing to do with. After soft *cough, cough* coercion by his wifey, Nate gives in, and they move their family to his hometown and old family home. This is where I was like cool beans, a haunted home/story... LOL, yeah. No. Not quite. It's way more than that. It's an epic journey that takes us up down sideways and long ways in a good way. Look, I'm not gonna spoil it for you, as you need to go read it, but I'll tell you this, if you don't enjoy puzzles, then this isn't for you.
Personally, this was magnificent, I loved the thriller/mystery aspect of it and the way the characters' background was looked into and how many important all small details were. Deserves a re-read in the future.
Hell, even after reading the acknowledgments, I'm glad Chuck decided to pick back up this project! Just goes to teach you that if you don't get it right the first time... maybe you just gotta cross a parallel universe, and it might be the right time.
I recommend this if you enjoyed Dark Matter by Blake Crouch and/or the TV series Dark.
