***These are my random thoughts after finishing the book for me to save as personal notes (because I can't see an option to make my review private). Some of the thoughts are an overall review of the book, or any questions/feelings that nagged at me throughout. There will almost definitely be spoilers. Didn't see that coming about Jake being Oliver
Too bad about Graham :(
I knew Jed was sus
Yay Fig is awesome
I thought there'd be more behind all the animals and spirals

It's a long one, and unnecessarily, I feel. It could lose about 100 pages and still have the same impact. All that said, I still really enjoyed it. Reminiscent of classic Stephen King.

I never review books but I can’t help myself with this one. Two stars for a semi entertaining story and because I do love longer books.

That being said, this was my first Wendig novel and I doubt I read another. The writing was strong at some points but just okay most of the time. The characters were exaggerated. The dialogue often unrealistic and down right embarrassing. But I can endure all of that just fine for a good story. The most frustrating part was the political propaganda. It was obvious and distracting from the story and always felt forced. It also felt like Christianity was somewhat mocked.

For experienced horror readers, you’ve already read this story before and I’m sure the writing was better.

I am ambivalent about this book; it really feels like it could be an installment of Stephen King's "Gunslinger" series, which I have read twice. Similar to King, the premise and atmosphere start out great and spooky. Also similar to King there are some plot contrivances and coincidences necessary to bring the story to a close given the sprawling (and creative!) world-building. All in all, I think the comparisons to King are apt, but King books have this magic "x" factor (is it the writing? the characters?) that always leaves me coming back for more despite their flaws - I didn't feel that here.

Weird, creepy, dark. My kind of book.

An interesting start and a strong ending that was let down by a middle that went on too long. Also, and I recognise what a pretentious thing this is to say, the way Wendig used similies really annoyed me
