There is a good horror/sci-fi story here but it’s so long winded; so much filler. Edit out 150 pages and you’d have a fun gripping read. Good enough that I wanted to know the ending but felt like I was dragged towards it. “I need this book to end” isn’t a good place to be. I really didn’t want to give up on it as Wendig can be a good writer with a great imagination…but this desperately clutches for metaphors where none were needed. So many sentences could be halved with no loss of meaning. And then he’d drop in the most bizarre words for some very obvious things; like he’s saying “Look! I am a writer…I know so many words” but each time he did it he strangled the life out of a sentence. Just because you’re a bestseller doesn’t mean the publishing editors should take a hands-off easy way out. Clunky.
The ending was interesting and I enjoyed the messaging behind it but the pacing of this book was a little jarring. It's a horror book with bits of humor, so that was a new one for me. But it very much pushes the power of love overcoming all and I can get behind that. It's a book that I would say is a nice little side read while you tackle something else, I kept picking it up and putting it down a lot (due to pacing mostly). I especially enjoyed the mother in this series because she is a foul-mouthed mama bear and it's nice to see a female character that isn't afraid to speak her mind. I did get a bit lost with the way you jump around in AUs and the chapter titles were a bit off and didn't quite work for me.
First half was excellent. Second half seemed kind of drawn out and I got impatient with it... came together for a solid finish.

Like it always is with Mr. Wendig, this was one hell of a wild ride.
From demons and other dimensions, to trauma - both self-Inflicted and the kind caused by others, this book is every single thing I love about a good horror novel.
Coming off of his newest book, Staircase in the Woods and also having read Black River Orchard, this book feels like the best mix of all the elements he tries to imbue - history and folklore, haunting visuals, and lovable characters that you root for the whole way through.
I was especially enthralled by Maddie's artwork come to life and by Oliver's ability to physically pull pain from other people . Such fascinating concepts!!!
I've basically become a "I'll read anything this man writes" type of fan and can't wait to see what he will be up to next.
As someone just starting out on my writing journey, I also always love his little notes at the end of his books. There's always a nugget of wisdom that seems to inspire me to get to work!
