The Bone Shard Daughter is a tale told from several different points of view. The first being from Lin, the daughter of the emperor. He is a master of bone magic. This is the ability to build animal like constructs to do his bidding and protect the city. Lin only wants the love of her father but he constantly tests her about memories she lost several years prior and she constantly fails him and thus fails to gain his love. Her rival, Banyan, is the emperor's foster, who threatens Lin's inheritance of the throne. Jovis is the other main character in this story. He is chasing after a mysterious blue sailed boat that captured his wife many years ago and he hopes to find her again someday. His random encounter with a strange creature whom decides to stay with him brings about changes in Jovis that he could have never imagined.
I really enjoyed the story, it seems to be set in a mythical land that has definite Asian influences in it. I am certainly looking forward to the next book in the series. I think fans of The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco would enjoy this book as much as I did. I highly recommend it.

DID NOT FINISH: 53%

This book feels like it’s hiding things for a reveal later, which typically doesn’t bother me, but here it feels super duper obvious. It seems like every chapter there’s a thing that should be explained that isn’t and you can tell that it’s because it’s gonna be presented in some sort of  twist moment.

The magic system is also very unclear. It’s wild that almost halfway through the book I still have no clue how anything works.

Mostly decided to DNF because from reviews of this/later books, it doesn’t seem like these plot points ever get explained.

honestly this book took a LONG time to capture my interest. But the final third was worth the slog imo because I am excited to read the second book.

I really, really enjoyed this book. Started a little slow, but as the storylines started intertwining, I knew I was hooked. Immediately jumping to the next one in the series

I enjoyed it!

I really liked Lin's journey to find herself through the secrets in the palace.

Jovis was really interesting at first, but I didn't really care for 'Jovis the Face of the Rebellion', but the bit at the end was promising.

The bits with Phalue were really interesting and well written, but it kinda felt like they belonged in a different book?
I would love to read a standalone just about her colony.

All in all, I really liked how the stories impacted one another in a bizarre and intricate world!

A very solid fantasy read that’s enjoyable, not over complicated and fun to read. I’m looking forward to reading the next!
