Are my cheesy romcom days over? Or is this book not just "it"?🥲

I tried so hard to force myself and finish it but I couldn't ... It doesn't match what its supposed to be, it's supposed to be enemies to lovers but I didn't see the hate, all I saw was some teasing, and it was so clear that Josh has a thing for Lucy.. 🙄

Besides the fact that their feelings were obvious within the first 85 pages whereas the book is +300 pages, I also didn't like the mention of how "small" she is every two lines, and ngl.. it felt more like they were lusting over eachother rather than liking eachother, and I personally don't like relationships that start like that.

Anyways, this is just my personal opinion, if you enjoyed it then Happy for you!🤗

i’m so curious how the movie is now but i don’t want to ruin this book

Reread 2/13/21: still great upon reread, though honestly, not quite as good as I remember, so I bumping it down from a 4.5 to a 4. Still a very swoony read with lots of fun banter!!!

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeekk!!!! So cute!! So swoony!! I’m obsessed!! I love the banter, the snark, the pining! What a fun ride! I stayed up until 2am trying to finish it in one sitting!

Overall, I’m giving this book 4/5 stars. I thought the ending wrapped up too quickly, there was a bit of internalized fat-phobia, which was very off-putting, and Lucy (the narrator) is soooooo unbearably pretentious in the first chapter I almost completely stopped reading (it gets much better after that).

But overall, I absolutely adored this book! I’m not usually a big romance reader, but this one hit all my buttons!

This is probably my new favorite romantic comedy.

Maybe 3.5 if im being generous im sorry

The Hating Game had a strong start, the rivalry the main characters possessed was presented well and had heaps of potential. Despite the promising start, the plot quickly diminished and the book felt more like a series of one shots strung together poorly. This led to a vague sense of inconsistency throughout the book which was simply unpleasant to read. The characters, too, are poorly expressed. They’re either happy or sad and experience very little character development that isn’t just a sudden mood change.

Personally, I am not a fan of how this book was laid out. It was inconsistent and lacked a reliable plot.

I picked this up on the recommendation of a trusted reader friend and was not disappointed. While she raved that it was near perfect, I had a couple of (constructive) criticisms. Regardless, this is a fabulous read for romance lovers.

This is the oft-repeated hate-to-love story told from the woman's perspective. While Lucy is a delightful main character, she tended to be a bit slow on the uptake. This came across to me as somewhat frustrating, since as a reader I was aware of what was going on. One of my pet peeves is finding that I as a reader am smarter than the main character about what's happening. It's the difference between the surprise of realising the circumstance with the character versus what can seem like endless waiting for the now clueless character to figure things out. While this creates some tension in the story, I find it more annoying than not.

On the other hand, this has one of the best written love scenes I've ever read. It's drawn out, not overly graphic (although definitely steamy/sexy) and builds perfectly. And for those of us who love a great male character who's got the woman pretty much figured out (without her realising it), Josh is the best.

With regard to the audio performance, I have to give Katie Schorr high marks. My only problems were that she could have distinguished the voices better; sometimes I didn't know who was speaking. Other times I didn't know whether someone was speaking or thinking. The speaking/thinking thing is something seasoned narrators know how to do, but it's definitely a skill that is difficult to achieve and very subtle.

My one other problem with the audio is that whoever produced this should have cut out the bits where Schorr caught her breath and swallowed before continuing. There is nothing like the sound of someone pausing, licking their lips and swallowing to yank you out of the story and into the narrator's booth.

These criticisms are, quite honestly, minor and incidental. The story was highly enjoyable and definitely one I'd recommend on audio or in print.
