I listened to a podcast recently where Hilderbrand said if you were new to her, she recommends this book, The Blue Bistro (haven’t read), and The Perfect Couple (read and liked). Because of this, I was expecting a lot more! Sadly, this was one of my least favorite novels of hers. I thought Randall was one of her worst characters ever. Demeter’s characterization made me really uncomfortable for reasons that I don’t want to put into words. This won’t keep me from reading Hilderbrand though, they’re the perfect escapist books during the summer and I’m not necessarily reading them to gain some major literary revelation.

Side note: What teenager today uses the word “lush” to describe an alcoholic? Her editor could have made the teenagers’ conversations a lot more realistic.

Usually Elin’s books are the perfect audiobooks for my commute because they suck you into the “perfect” but not-so-perfect Nantucket world with all its secrets and drama, but I found most of the characters in this one so dislikable that it was hard to get through

Ugh. Just. Ugh. If you pick up this book thinking "Oh, Summerland, a book about summer in Nantucket," run and don't look back. This book was not a fun, breezy beach read. Don't get fooled like me.

Easy, atmospheric read with sympathetic characters.

It had promise, but never really delivered. I don't mind a book where the characters have flaws; it makes it real and relatable. However, too many characters in this book were just thoroughly unlikeable. It made it very difficult to root for their redemption.

Heartbreaking and gripping, finished in one day. Reminiscent of the story lines of Jodi Picoult, but written in reverse, tragedy starts off the story, and you end with a vague feeling of hope, but also this slight dissatisfaction that it didn't end perfectly. And then you realize that that's how real life works.

I loved all the jumping around Elin had in this book, it was really fun to read each characters perspective on what was going on and hearing their side of the story. It was fun, easy, read and one that I enjoyed.
