I am an outlier on this one. I normally would love a long book like this . It’s a mystery and a family/friendship saga in one. The two things I disliked were all the crazy coincidences that had to line up to make everything come together at the end. I won’t detail them because of spoilers but it was not even believable in the slightest. It felt like I was cheated in a way. After a really long build up, every chapter toward the end was a page turner with some major revelation to make it all fit together in a tidy bow. The other thing I was not fond of was the writing which had all kinds of hanging phrases that weren’t full sentences and long descriptions that didn’t amount to anything for me. I was really disappointed as it just seemed this would be a book I would like and I wasted many hours on it. It wasn’t the worst thing I’ve read lately but definitely not worth the time invested to finish. Maybe if you are a fast reader you could justify it or speed through some of the bad writing. So many people like it there is definitely something different in my approach to it.

I don’t know why exactly but it felt so painful to get myself to read this. The first section was the only interesting section that I read. It was hard to follow along and I didn’t realize the main characters were older than what I thought for the longest time. Usually I love short chapters but with these, it just felt like nothing was happening. I think the worst part is that none of the dialogue felt complete; none of the conversations felt like full conversations and I think that’s why I was left feeling lost the entire time. Frankly, this is way too long of a book to be feeling that way halfway through.
