An interesting read, it was great to see the characters develop throughout the course of the story.
This is such a beautiful book. I have watched the film many times but had never read the book - I’m so pleased I did. It’s such a lovely, well-written story that captures you. The conversational style of writing makes you feel like your a friend of the author and she’s telling you this whilst attending afternoon tea! The diversity of characters’ personality shines in both the main characters and side characters. I love how the children develop relationships with the locals on their explorations and they like to see justice and help those who need it, even though they themselves are poor.
I loved reading the adventures of the children through the author’s eyes. A beautiful story of love, adventure and courage!

I watched the 1970 film adaptation of this book a few years ago and adored it and so I decided to read the book.
Well this book was absolutely gorgeous! I loved the different and varied characters, especially the main three children. Bobbie was obviously my favourite out of the three because she is the oldest child and so am I in my family, and I also loved her arguments with Peter. I also loved their Mother, she was a stoic and gentle presence in the book.
This book is certainly of its time. E Nesbit is writing in the Edwardian time, and so her ideas about men and women’s place in the world are not the ideas that I would want people to hold now. However the female characters in this book are written with respect and depth, as they should be, and we should not boycott a book because it shows some questionable ideals of a time, unless those are truly harmful to our modern day society.
Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to read old children’s classics.

A children's classic about three siblings who end up moving to the country and living beside a railway station, the story follows them befriending locals and getting up to mischief in the area surrounding their home.
This book was so boring. It is really short, and took me multiple sessions over the course of a week to finish it. Neither the audiobook or physical intrigued me.
I'm sure this book has some literary merit, as a classic, but I wouldn't recommend.

This kids book appears on a couple 'must read' lists... though after reading it, that honor is not so clear. A current parallel is the separation of immigrant children from their parents by pres Voldemort, er, Dumbtruck.
