One of the best thriller/detective novels I have ever read. The island of Lewis was beautifully described and the perfect harsh setting for this cold and sad story. The characters were very realistic and easy to imagine, living in such a hostile environment. The book balanced the past and present well and the twists and turns kept me guessing right up until the end.

Extremely dark mystery that ends with you not really liking any of the characters. They all some fallible without redemption, and the setting is extremely bleak. The only redeeming quality of the book is the writing style, which is very descriptive (almost to the point that you don't really want the gory detail of certain parts).

As with the other in the trilogy I have read (out of sequence but never mind) I found this really well written, with some lovely moments in it. When I saw it was a trilogy my assumption was that it would be based on the character and his dealing with different crimes - well yes and no for this. Very cleverly plotted and well wroth the read. Must get hold of the last one now.
