Lots of good themes in this, but it was a slooooow read for me.

Lost interest. Was interesting at first, learning of Chinese culture but not enough happened to keep my interest. Read it at night at Morton lake while camping.

Not normally the kind of book I read, but the description drew me in and I'm really glad it did!! While not sapphic (we can only wish), the relationship between Yunxian and Meiling is beautifully written. I definitely recommend, even to those (like me) who normally aren't fans of historical fiction.

both disquieting and inspiring. provokes thought and unease at the parallels still present today, but also gives an important lesson of the importance of women and those with limited power supporting one another against all odds. strength comes in many forms. knowledge as well. women have always endured and found ways to thrive regardless of their circumstances. the same fears of loss present 500 years ago will never leave the human conscience no matter how high we climb. death, illness, and hardship are terrifying but inevitable today, yesterday, tomorrow. having a circle of loved ones around you will only support you in these times.
