"we can still cut and run," he whispered...

2016 was the year of realizing things and 2017 is the year of getting WREKT by books with absolutely horrible covers (#graphicdesignismypassion @foxholecourt).

Seriously. This book was a real trip. It follows 2 FBI agents and their investigation of a serial killer on the prowl. But if we're being honest that's not at all what this book is about.

It's about two fucked-in-the-head men who are absolutely perfect for each other but don't know how to deal with their ~feelings~. I'm not kidding, if you're reading the actual description of this book and thinking "oh wow! this is going to be super engaging and mysterious," you're going to absolutely hate this book.

This book is character driven to the extreme and the plot is really just a backdrop for the "romance" (you'll get the quotes if you actually read this). But the characterization and complication of the characters in this book is superb and really reminds me of Nora Sakavic's series in that way. No frills, with the bulk of the action existing in the heads of the lovely Grady & Garrett.

My only serious complaint was how disjointed this damn ebook was. I had a really hard time keeping track of who was speaking and whose perspective was happening at what point. But having started the second book I can say that all is good. Or as good as things can be reading about these two crazy gay jack asses *sigh*. Leave me to my new obsession.

Reread via audio #3

There's nothing more to say about this series. I wish I had reviewed it back when I first read it because it the fresh thoughts would have been more poignant for sure.

However I will say:
- One of my favorite MM romance series
- One of my favorite MM Couple of all time.
- LOVED how imperfect these men are.
- LOVED their relationship progression. There is attraction and a spark, but no insta-love to be seen. THANK THE LORD.
- Steam is FREAKING HOT.

why the 4 stars?
- The time away from each other.
- Sleeping with other people while they were not together... This is a pet peeve of mine.
- The serial killer was fairly obvious.

Why do people like this series? I got halfway through this book before I couldn't bear to read another page.

The writing is so very bad and Ty/Zane are such an obnoxious couple. Why does Zane have to be such a loser? I really don't like pairings where one is always making the other look stupid because he's ~so much better~ and that's exactly what happens here. On like every page. Zane does something stupid or ignorant or unthinking and looks like a complete idiot while Ty always looks ~cool~ and ~suave~ and *yawn*.

This book needed an editor who would've trimmed the fuck out of all of the stupid, redundant, adverby actions; the whiplashy POV changes; the beige characters; and the unnecessarily verbose dialogue tags.

Okay, really can't give it any more stars than his, because of the constant switching between POV's. Heard it'll get better though, so I'm sticking with it. Because I loved all the rest. This book managed to make me laugh and cry in the span of ten pages, so I think that's a job well done.
Oh and looooooooooooooooooved the serial killer soryline.

I can see why this is a lot of people’s favourite, the two main characters where a big reason why I was so intrigued to continue when I first started and then it just kept in going.
The thing is, they never said anything, the whole book was them hardly communicating with each other, with us, and it dragged. I didn’t really see why 2 parts where needed, not really, and i felt like I was slugging thought it (honestly I swore at one point I was reading backwards). The end wrapped up the way I thought it would by the first explosion but nothing happen. It was like “we can’t figure it out” for 350 pages and the rest everything just clicked and ended. And yes, that’s kinda how mysteries tend to go, but it felt like this one was doing that to the extreme.
It hooked me, that’s for sure, it bored me, definitely, but I don’t regret the read and can see why people love the series, I just won’t be one of them.

Oh, it also had every paragraph head hopping, which wasn’t always don’t in the best ways, even after getting use to the the writing style, I still had moments that I have to blink and figure out who was talking right then.

This was a long book and at times I got really frustrated with these 2 stubborn men, that said, they were 2 hot, smart, strong characters which I enjoyed reading.

I had suspicions about "who dunnit" as I read through but I also found myself thinking, maybe I'm wrong - which was a nice change from knowing who it was through the entire story. I enjoyed the mystery of it, but seriously these poor guys were getting hurt every few pages, not sure how they survived. HA.

There were some hot scenes between these 2 and the tension between them was electric at times. Which was fun to read. I found myself bouncing back and forth on who I liked most. Ty and Zane complimented each other well and I'm not the only one who thought so, seeing the ending.

I recommend the read to anyone who enjoys fun mystery/suspense stories with some hot man on man action tossed in there for some steaminess although the sex wasn't over the top. It was a pg-13 story for me but that's just because I like a little more XXX.

I actually got a dilemma rating this story. I would give 1 or 2 star to the mystery. I don't know it's just me who like crime/suspense stories so I could see the pattern of the story or because the mystery was just too simple--and mean it to be. I know who the serial killer since, like, 50 pages. I mean, it was so damn obvious! Even if I'm trying not to find the killer, it's showed right in front of my eyes it's hard not to know. And yet Ty and Zane kept sliping every time they try near finding the truth--and I'm actually found the truth a few pages before their near-find-the-truth. It just made me wanted to smack them both on their head.

But on the other hand, the characterization, the interaction, the chemistry, the romance, it's all perfect. I would give 4 or even 5 star for their development. I love when Ty and Zane pissing off each other to make them true to themselves. And I love them become so dense on their own feelings--and now, I assume that they're THAT dense even for their job solving mystery so. They had their own terrible past and kept rubbing each other wounds while still care for each other. Their interaction make them be my favorite couple in my heart.

So yeah, finally I decided to give them the middle score--eventhough I still want to give them 5 star, but sadly I can't ignore the bad of the mystery. *sob*

It was obvious from fairly early on who the bad guy was
Spoiler and the murderer recreating scenes from a book/film/history is a pretty commonly used scenario so while I hadn't read poe but I knew from fairly early on he was probably copycatting other murders. Surely someone else with some connection to the murders had read poe enough to recognise one of the murders and even if they had't they could have at least chucked a few searches into google and see what sort of thing it flagged up.
.

The characters were a bit too determinedly snarky to be believable and there were other aspects that I really couldn't believe - their determination to avoid hospital seemed stupid and unprofessional
Spoiler why wouldn't zane accept a local anaesthetic, those jabs are amazing and as we are repeatedly told non-addictive. And why would anyone take that many pain meds? more tablets doesn't equal better it equals overdose- if you want to be super functional you might take a bit more than recommended but not enough to kill you. Zane knows enough about drugs to know it was stupid so why did he do it? It just felt like an easy way for the author to put some extra conflict into the story, rather than what Zane would actually have done.
There were just a lot of occasions that I was like "well that was stupid" and I doubted that experienced FBI officers would have done it.

I liked the romance, and the sex scenes (While somewhat out of my comfort zone) were good but anal (or any type of sex) isn't supposed to hurt/leave physical damage (unless that's what you're into- but that's a whole nother thing and these characters weren't).

The writing was okay but it did get confusing (I was never sure which of them 'he' referred to) and the POV switches were confusing.
