i loved the prose and the way this was written, which is no surprise as i was a big fan of the series of unfortunate events, but the concept of the 'different' girl, and the whole relationship with ed was just questionable and the reason they break up was??
the little glimpse of Al's yearning did hit the spot though

Why did we break up? It's a question that we've all asked ourselves at least once. But for Min, the narrator of this story, the question is rhetorical. She knows exactly why she and Ed broke up.
Min is on a mission to return the items that remind her of Ed. Why We Broke Up is the accompanying letter. Punctuated with images of the knick-knacks she's collected, Min shares her memories in a way that only the broken-hearted can. Beginning with fragments of the story, you know Min can't be believed when she ends the first chapter with "and that, Ed, is why we broke up."
Why We Broke Up is painful to read, not because it's poorly written, but because Daniel Handler is so effective in making you identify with Min's emotions. No matter how much you want to stop reading, you're compelled to keep going. You have to find out why we broke up.

PS Too many run on sentences/guys are jerks/don't bother dating in high school.

I enjoyed this book. The style of the storytelling combined with the pictures made it very unique. Min is writing a letter to Ed, her ex-boyfriend and explaining why they broke up by using items she kept during their relationship. It felt real, reminiscent of my own relationships in many ways. Any girl can connect to this.
Interesting story-telling with illustrations to boot! It does indeed remind you of the feelings of first love/heartbreak with high school angst.
original review: fuck you, Ed
updated review: things I learned: relationships lead to breakups, bitter sixteens are better than sweet sixteens, I really could not care less about classic films.
I’ve been meaning to get to this book for AGES, and no better time than when you’re stuck in quarantine! This was an interesting book because the entire time you follow this couple, you know it’s gonna end on a breakup ( that’s basically the whole premise of the book ). The art was gorgeous and the writing was lyrical ( although sometimes I had to reread sentences three times before I knew what the hell was happening ). Very happy to have this beautiful book as part of my collection.

sad
slow-paced
genuinely beautiful tragedy that gnaws at my heart but somehow about regular high schoolers
It broke my heart all over again, but it was really great. It definitely makes you feel that way again, but also makes you realize the happiness you had as well, and why it was worth it.
