So...
kinda funny (Handler is Snicket) in a sarcastic kind of way
angsty teenage whatnot
interesting format

Dizzying, I think, says it best. The style is perfect, and funny, and feels oh too real. After the reading I was at, Handler mentioned something about eavesdropping on teenage girls on public transportation, and I think he must do it A LOT.
Simultaneously made me think "ah, to be a teenager again" and "oh thank GOD I'm not a teenager anymore."

Well, that was nothing like books I've ever read - interesting reading experience, unusual style of writing, great depiction of what happens when two different worlds collide. I loved the illustrations, I liked many minor, but interesting details, Al was absolutely adorable!!! The only difficulty I had was all the analogies with films, because I don't know any of them, so that part was lost on me, but in all the other aspects it was worth reading. Great, unique book, but not for teenagers - they wont't get it, and quit reading it at the point of Lottie Carson chase. It's for adults, especially patient ones, because it's not an easy read - it demands effort.

Two words for this book : I tried. It was boring

At the beginning I thought Ed was a jerk, then as the story unravelled, I became completely enamoured with their blossoming love. Even though they are so different, their love was so sweet.

I honestly didn't see the ending coming. I mean, I know the title kind of gives away the ending anyway, but I was so engrossed with the love that I forgot to try and figure out the real reason they broke up. And I was surprised! That so rarely happens to me, I'm usually really good at picking what's going to happen before I finish the first paragraph.

The whole jock-falls-for-nerdy-girl has been done so so many times before (I'm thinking fondly of Freddie Prince Jnr in 'She's all that') but I've never read it from this perspective. Usually they both are able to overcome their massive differences and have a happy ending walking off into the sunset, but this is a detailed look into why it couldn't work, item by item. We all have a few relationship relics lurking around the house somewhere, things you just can't bring yourself to throw away, that have strong memories of a failed relationship tied to it.

The writing is really very clever. The banter between the characters is very witty and intelligent for teenagers, but it just works. There were even a few one-liners that made me chuckle out aloud. I wanted to check out a few of the musicians and films that Min referenced throughout the book, and they were all made up! They were written so well that it was so believable - another reason why Handler is a talented writer.

It's not a very long book - I finished it in a single weekend - but I would read it again, and would recommend it to most people.

The glossy pages sold me the minute my fingers slid over the smooth, shiny pages. I loved the pictures in this book. I think they added so much to the story. I could not wait to see the next item in the box and then get the story of it. I know we all have stories like this where we either wrote or thought to write a letter like this to an Ex. It was just great to read this girls run-o sentences and train of thought when she was writing the letter with Al waiting in the coffee shop. I am glad I picked up this book.

What I've noticed is that people tend to feel one of two ways about this book; they either really love it or really hate it. I found myself to be in a middle grounds of sorts.
I did like how Daniel Handler built a world for this story.
Spoiler all the movies in the book are basically created for Min.
Unfortunately, I felt Min should have been...angrier with Ed in her letter?
Spoiler if I got cheated on and I decided to write a "why we broke up" letter...it'd be a lot angrier than hers was.
Ed was a jerk the entire time; the tone for how he was as a character was set within the first two items.
Spoiler he showed late on first date with a lame excuse? really?

I feel like I wanted more from this, but it felt slow and fell flat in some parts.

It was ok. The beginning was good but it seemed to drag on and lost excitement as you got deeper into the book
emotional funny lighthearted medium-paced

Some of the lines in this tugged at my heart hard.
