As referências contínuas a filmes dos quais nunca tinha ouvido falar criaram algum "ruído" enquanto lia, mas a organização da história (sabemos como acaba, não sabemos como vamos chegar lá) é interessante.
This book appealed to me perhaps because I have been guilty of archiving every agonizing detail of failed relationships gone by as did Min, the main character, who I found to be sweet and relatable in her vulnerability. Here's a slice of how she sees herself, "My jokes are desperate and complicated and nobody laughs." Loved this clever story of "everything but" and more.
a creatively presented (somewhat stream-of-conscience, with color artwork) teen romance about loving someone who is all wrong for you.

Aunque el final me desconcertó y pensé en quitarle una estrellita, reflexione y no pudo acabar de otra manera. Me encantó, me recordó tantas cosas de mi propio pasado, me ayudó a entender tantas cosas, sentí a los personajes reales y parte de mi, me encariñe con su relación, sus sentimientos eran mis sentimientos. Tenía que dejar de leer en ciertas partes para asimilar lo que estaba pasando, releía frases que me parecieron preciosas, saboreaba cada objeto... Me encanto, de mis favoritos del año y de mi vida.
This book took me entirely too long to read. It was very hard to get into in the beginning. I was over half way through before I was actually enjoying the book. The narrator, Min, does not sound like a normal teenager. She has a weird interest in all of these old movies that no normal high schooler would have. She kept using the word "sec" instead of second which drove me crazy.
The whole story of why they broke up is pretty obvious to anyone who has ever been in high school. Right off the bat, you know it won't work out (aside from the title). They start dating even though everyone knows it won't end well (spoiler: it doesn't end well). They actually fall in love! I had some hope for them at this point. He seemed to genuinely care for Min so I thought he could be redeemed. He could not be redeemed. Ed turned out to be just like every other boy in high school. It was very shocking once you find out what he did and the real reason they broke up. For every reason for them not to be together, Min had found a reason for them to be together. I thought she honestly cared for him and I felt sad for her when he turned out to be who everyone said he was. Once this book got going, it was enjoyable to read. It dragged on a little, but otherwise it was a good story.

Es el primer libro que leo de este autor, aunque es muy conocido por “Una serie de eventos desafortunados” serie que escribió bajo el seudónimo de Lemony Snicket. Toda la referencia que tenía era la película con Jim Carrey en donde se nota un estilo muy marcado y único en su forma de contar historias. Lo normal no va con él.
Ya sabes que va a pasar al final de este libro: hay una pareja que se separará y la historia intenta explicarte el por qué. La encargada de esto es Min, una chica de preparatoria con una gran afición por el mundo de las películas. Su romance con Ed Slarteton, segundo capitán del equipo de baloncesto, ocurre muy rápido y sin mucho sentido. Creen estar enamorados, pero es un amor basado en lo diferente que son y en la curiosidad. A pesar de esto, mientras leía quería que se quedaran juntos porque eran felices…de un modo extraño…pero felices.
Ambos personajes están lejos de la perfección. Ed en cierta forma encaja en el perfil del chico fuerte, dulce y encantador, pero solo hasta cierto punto (ay Ed como te odié). Min es “diferente”.
La narrativa del autor es muy particular y a ratos poética. Al principio, la mente de Min me confundió. Su forma de expresarse, de contar las cosas, los flash-backs, todo fue un enredo en mi cabeza. Hay muchas referencias a películas y actores que me sacaron de lugar. Pero al rato te acostumbras y empieza a gustarte. Todo se cuenta a través de una carta que Min le escribe a Ed como modo de desahogo, pero más intentando comprender por qué estuvo con el en primer lugar y justificando ciertas acciones que lamentaba. Es más, desde el principio es obvio que a Min le molestan muchas cosas de Ed, pero de todos modos sigue con él.
Ahora, lo hermoso de este libro es la atención a los detalles por parte de Min. Cada momento que pasó con Ed significó algo especial, atesoró cada instante, cada gesto, cada regalo. Hubieron momentos extraños e imperfectos pero de gran valor. Nada se le pasó por alto y a través de sus palabras empiezas a apreciar también a Ed y a ambos como pareja, lo que consigue que el final sea un tanto (bastante) doloroso.
Las ilustraciones de Maira Kalman son una parte importante del relato. Cada vez que Min habla de algún objeto de la caja lo vemos en un dibujo. Son todos muy llamativos y hacen que leer el libro sea más entretenido.
Es uno de esos libros que cuando reflexionas y lo análisis más y más te gusta. Es una narración diferente, una historia de amor, un relato dulce y amargo a la vez.

2.5/3 stars. I'm sorry if you love this book. The writing style was kind of weird to me. I didn't like this book as much as I thought I would. I found Min and Ed's relationship was really weird and Ed had a weird vibe to me. My favorite character in this book was definitely Al, but that's not saying a lot.
I really enjoyed it at the end, though. Every thing in the beginning feels very dragged out and not very interesting. But when they went to Willows, OH MY GOSH. I knew I was right about Ed all along. That was the best part in the entire book. When they were talking about Annette, you'll know what I'm saying if you've read the book, what Ed said was total bull crap.
And then the conversation with Al. I felt that it was a little bit rushed and was just skimmed over. All in all, this book was okay. Not really a book I would recommend, but if you like breakup books, or if you liked the A Series of Unfortunate Events series, you should pick up this book.

I wanted to shake Min and shout "what is wrong with you?!" But since I haven't been a teenage girl in quite some time that really can't be too surprising. I can only guess that Mr. Handler has been a teenage girl more recently as he was able to put himself (and me) into the head of one (teenage girl) rather convincingly. And Maira Kalman (the illustrator) just rocks.
