This didn't hit 4 stars for me til the last quarter of the story because I had been struggling with the author's choppy, disjointed writing style which frequently had me scratching my head as to what the heck was even going on. But by the time you reach the conclusion, the characters and their plight has taken such a firm hold of you that you can't help but lament that it's over. I absolutely loved Minerva and how real she became on the page. This made her heartbreak all the more tragic to me. I can't wait to share this book with my daughter when she hits that "first love" stage and needs an example of a well-worded warning about hastily giving yourself away to someone that doesn't deserve even a fraction of who you are. Give this book a try!
I loved the concept of this book. It’s something I could see myself doing after a breakup.
The story, however, was a little bit of a letdown. Her love interest was an arrogant jerk from the start- so it was pretty easy to predict that her friends would be right and the guy would break her heart.

I don't quite know what the point of this book was and all the characters are insufferable. Especially Ed. Also, who names the "hot popular guy" in a book ED?! He's not a horse.
But overall not the worst thing I've ever read.

Hilarious and heart breaking YA novel. Loved it.
Why We Broke Up is a gorgeously illustrated letter written by Min, who explains to her now ex-boyfriend Ed why they broke up. I rarely read contemporary YA but the premise of this book sounded like an interesting read, so I gave it a shot.
The first surprise about this book is the length of it - Min really goes into detail, replaying (like a movie) the whole relationship she had with Ed. The book is like an emotional roller-coaster ride beginning with anger and - on my part - dislike for Ed and Min both, ending in heartbreak and a feeling of companionship for Min. Some reviewers mention that they figured out why they broke up early in the book but I was just as shocked to find out as Min was. Now, what happened in about the middle of the book were two things: 1. I started to see genuine feelings between the two main characters in Min's account of certain memories involving coffee and getting up early; and 2. Min became a character to care for because I finally saw that this relationship was not like a try-out for her but she was rooting for it with all she had.
There are certain things that do not really work in this novel though, like e.g. the movie and music references that are not really references but all invention of the author. The frame story of bringing back the box to Ed the very day Min sits down to write the longest break up-letter ever written (or so it seems). And, finally, Min's voice in the beginning of the book gives off a feeling of ambiguity - as a reader I asked myself, is she being sarcastic? Is this all a joke? It is difficult to get a feeling for her because she is so angry and dissatisfied.
Overall, I am glad I did not give up after the first hundred pages or so because I would have missed out on an interesting story and some really nice language.

This is one of the first YA contemporary books I've enjoyed in a long time, because it wasn't trying so. hard. There wasn't some huge, poetical revelation and the main character didn't pretend like this was going to change the course of her entire life. It was an honest story about the reality of high school instalove and how shitty the aftermath is. Super good.
*2.5
This was such a miserable read. Min was an annoying Character sho played ed for things that weren’t even bad?? The only reasonable thing to break up with him for was cheating. And then Al is all of a sudden in love with her? There was no plot to that. Nothing against Al but there was no build up for that. So glad i finished the book.

the writing was almost poetic at points and the story flowed so easily, despite being in a somewhat fragmented fashion. seeing the items before min told the story of their significance made it all the more easy to enjoy.
This was very annoying to read at times - the style of writing was awkward. The sentence structure of some of it was just very odd. Lots of rambling.
