I think this one was my favorite so far in the series. The one character charmelita bothered me and got under my skin badly but Snicket did an amazing job having a villainous kid part of the casting in this series so far.

I completely forgot all about the Quagmire triplets! I'm enjoying rereading this series after forgetting so many of the details. Also I'm so glad that they finally mentioned the VFD.

My least favorite so far in the series but i’m interested in where it’s going! I don’t think I ever read past this book when i was reading them for the first time.

Moderately better than 'the miserable mill'. I really enjoyed the Quagmire triplets and Carmelita Spats, although I do hope her character gets explored further in future books.
Whilst this book continued to be repetitive, I enjoyed the ending which alludes to more interesting plot points. I'm excited to continue the series and see whether it becomes more interesting!

3.5* The Austere Academy was a decent installment of this series following the Baudelaires. It wasn’t my favorite setting, but it is an important book as it begins to lay out details that I’m sure will become relevant in future books.
I do find myself considering how unrealistic these situations are and how absolutely dumb the adults that the Baudelaires have to deal with are pretty frequently while reading. But alas, it is fiction and meant to be exaggerated. But to what extent?
I also find some of these events described to be child abuse. Yes it’s fictional, but in any real world scenario I have to hope that someone would come to these children’s aid. Maybe I’m overthinking it, but some of these scenarios get really dark unexpectedly for a book that’s targeted toward younger audiences. But I do think it’s important to have stories that display the darker side of life so maybe I’m overthinking that as well. If I were a parent, I guess I’d like to know what sort of things were happening in the book so I could discuss it with my kid as they read the story. These books were published before trigger warnings were a thing in books though.
Anyway, I’m rambling. Back on track, this was a decent read. I did like the introduction of the new characters that the Baudelaires can relate to. It’s nice that someone in their life acts like they give a care about them. Planning to continue the series soon.

A sure step-up from The Miserable Mill. I loved that we got a lot more clues and hints at what the true mystery is in the series. How the Quagmire triplets fit into their story is also interesting.
Whilst I am glad to be reread this series for the sake of completing it, I am not always super excited to pick up an installment to read. I had such an amazing time rereading the Harry Potter series last year so this process is definitely not as life-changing! But I will be pleased to have finished this for my younger self.

I didn't like this one as much as some of the other ones.
