one of my childhood books i really like the way it’s written and the setting though it is a bit dark and i was a bit frustrated at times with the injustice of it (no spoilers though!!)
Soooooo have you ever picked a book to read just because it was available and you were on a waitlist for another book? That’s what happened here.

Annabelle's choice to defend herself and her brothers against a violent bully are in the forefront of this novel about standing up for yourself and others. She also befriends a troubled hermit character and rallies to his side when it seems he may have done an unspeakable thing. What I liked best about it is that she makes mistakes, gets really discouraged, but never gives up. And even though the ending , I did feel that the book's overall vibe was full of hope. The kind of hope that is manufactured by an open mind and hard work.
I thought the bully, Betty, was rather one-dimensional. Annabelle is a pretty complex character, and we get a fair amount of background - eventually - on Toby, but Betty is mostly presented as pretty, violent, almost psychopathic.

is full of tragedy, beyond what I was expectingI thought the bully, Betty, was rather one-dimensional. Annabelle is a pretty complex character, and we get a fair amount of background - eventually - on Toby, but Betty is mostly presented as pretty, violent, almost psychopathic.
This reminded me in a way of The Book Thief. What is more, it was really fast paced, easy to get through and enjoyable.
Sophsticated and subtle historical fiction. May best serve those well read kids not ready for To Kill a Mockingbird. Woulk has established herself as one to watch and one of my favorites.
It's good. That's damning with faint praise, isn't it? It's well-written, the characters feel real and I like the specificity of place and time. However, another serious well-meaning YA book about a young person realizing the world is scary and complicated is not exactly earth-shattering.
This book will make you want to stay up all night to finish it. It is amazing!
Absolutely loved this book! I love the characters, and particularly the way you saw the main character develop and grow in such a short span of time. Short read but immensely powerful.
