Definitely see the TKAM similarities. Despite the main character being MG age, I'd hesitate to put this into the hands of my middle grader unless they were on the older end of that spectrum (12-13) as the themes are tough.

I thought this was very well-written, but I gave it three because I felt it would be a hard-sell for the audience it is aimed at and I personally found myself drifting off halfway through. The overall theme was a sweet one but I also found myself going, "That's it?" at the very end.
I listened to this book in one day while at the beach, at 2x speed, so it took very little time. At first I thought it was going to be another book like the Calpurnia Tate books--lighthearted rural educational tome. Instead it was an engaging problem-solving book but then SO BLEAK! I was sitting there feeling assured that nothing really terrible would happen, even after Betty was _impaled_ in the shoulder, and then, suddenly, she died! And then Toby!? And basically in a suicide-by-cop, though of a different sort!? So sad! So unexpectedly sad!
I liked how it represented bullying and racism in a manner that makes it very clear that bullying isn’t acceptable and you should ask for help, and you shouldn’t think all people from a community are alike
Mindblowingly good. There's something very real in the tone that makes everything fit into place so well. The rhythm of the sentences is also FANTASTIC, keeping you on your toes when it's tense with snappiness and making you comfortable with longer, more descriptive sentences.
I love how the author plays with your feelings for the characters. The themes don't feel forced and more mature, better than I've seen other books with similar messages written. Overall great job. I don't know if I'll read the sequel because of how much I like the closure, but I may give it a shot in the future.
