Rita's psycho kids continue to be annoying af anytime they're present, and Deborah was taken out of commission for the second time. Boo. She's the best part of these books, yet she keeps getting soft fridged by getting seriously hurt and relegated to the sidelines for the majority of the adventure. At least Sargent Doakes and his artificial voice box adds a dose of hilarity during his brief appearances.

Dexter by Design picks up with a Dexter who is now even more ensconced in normalcy: Father, brother, husband and forensic blood splatter analyst. The villain in this tale is a troubled artist who sets his tableau's with murder victims. Deborah is attacked by this evil-doer and Dexter stands alone to exact vengeance. This book unfortunately continues the downward spiral of the Dexter-verse and I doubt that I will continue reading the series. This book, where better than the third, did not have the magic the first two stories possessed. Jeff Lindsay continues to bombard his readers with near constant reminders of 'Miami Traffic', 'How Dexter does not have feelings', 'Dexter's Dark passenger' and 'Dexter's non-stop quest to satisfy his physical hunger'. You know what would bring me back to the series? Dexter actually killing off a few who deserve it instead of a single antagonist being chased down for the entire novel. The book was okay, but certainly not great.
Este libro era un regalo de cumpleaños de hace unos años. Pendiente de lectura y ya pasado mi fervor por la serie "Dexter" tras el bajón que tuvo en sus últimas temporadas he decidido abordarlo en estos días.
Mis expectativas sobre el libro en el que se basan las aventuras televisivas del personaje no eran muy altas. Aunque he de reconocer que leer justamente el cuarto libro de la saga (sí, quien me lo regaló no miró el orden de publicación) abrió alguna esperanza a que tuviera trama similar a la cuarta temporada de la serie, con el asesino Trinity (para mí la mejor temporada con diferencia). Pero no.
Si no conoces al personaje por la serie o libros anteriores, empezar por este te va a llevar muy perdido. El autor ya da muchas cosas asentadas. Por suerte, los personajes son casi idénticos a los de la serie, especialmente la cargante hermana Deb Morgan. :-/
Es un libro rápido de leer, simple entretenimiento. No aspira a más (creo). Repite la fórmula de la serie en cuanto a que hay un asesino que se enfrenta al oscuro pasajero de Dexter y todo eso. Mientras, tiene sus movidas personales con Rita, los niños, su hermana y algunos policias pisándole los talones.
Pero a mitad de libro, la trama empieza a decaer. Todo se hace cada vez más inverosimil y repetitivo, recordándome mucho a las últimas temporadas de la serie. Dexter se mueve rodeado de personajes que entorpecen la trama. ¡Incluso a veces es el mismo protagonista el que se vuelve un circunloquio narrativo que cansa!
Entré en la lectura de Dexter como una tarea pendiente a corresponder con un regalo, con las puertas abiertas a leer el resto de la saga. Creo que optaré por otras opciones.

Meh. A lot of people are saying they didn't like "Dexter in the Dark" and that this was better, but I disagree. As implausible as this series is to begin with (which is why I love it), I found that it started losing altitude around the 1/2 way mark, and never really pulled the nose up at the end. Sort of disappointed, although the ending screams "Who wants a 5th book!" so I guess we'll have to see what comes out of Lindsay next!
This could have been better, a marked improvement over the tripe that was the third book in this series but still it was only eh in my opinion. I feel like the killer was a bit vague, if Lindsay had developed it more, it could have been something really good. Also, by the time this was published the TV series had become huge so maybe the publishing company is pressuring him to pump out more books? I don't know, it felt rushed to me.

I'm officially done with the Dexter books. The television series is so much more well written and perfectly plotted, with the most believably unbelievable twists. Jeff Lindsey has allowed for this very interesting character to stagnate and his books to ride on the coattails of the popularity of the Showtime series. Aside from a couple of laugh-out-loud moments, this book went nowhere for me: uninteresting bad guy, uninteresting "good" guy, unbelievable motivations, actions and conclusion.
I stuck with the books because of my loyalty to the first installment, but I'm quitting; there just isn't enough time in the world for a mediocre reading experience, no matter what expectations have been created by earlier works. How disappointing.

As usual with the Dexter books, the writing is a little too cutesy for me, but I like the stories and the thriller aspects, so I keep reading them.
