You don't understand how much I enjoyed reading this book, from the first to the last story every single one made me feel immensely emotional, Green Frog is the perfect book if you are looking for an immersive experience and stories that will somehow touch your deepest thoughts.
My favourites from this collection are definitely Names for Fireflies and How to Eat Your Own Heath, but from one of my previous posts you can see how I actually liked most of the stories as they have an average of 4/5 stars.
As someone who only recently became an adult I appreciate how these stories approached the life of asian women struggling to find their place, from being unable to understand your parents, to feeling like a disappointment and faking to be alright for the sake of appearances.
This is probably going to be one of my top 10 readings of 2024, so I'm completely honest when I say that you absolutely have to give it a chance and read it!

I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. My personal favourites were:
- Human Hearts
- Rabbit Heart
- Attachment Processes
- Mantis
Got three stories in and realized I am just not a fan of Chung’s writing. The themes are layered on thick, I felt like many of the stories had an extremely similar arc, and most of them I was left thinking… wait… that’s it? Where’s the rest of it?

I LOVE short stories. This collection was especially meaningful as a woman.
Some of the stories made me emotional, especially the ones where characters has struggles in their relationships with their parents. IT was nice to see that all cultures struggle to find and/or accept the love our parents can offer.
I particularly loves the Praying Mantis story. The line, "Wanting does not always have to equal having. If all you do is go after what you want then you may never know what you need," hit me in a particular way, and I loved how relevant it was to a story about bugs. 🐛🪲🕷

It's been some time since a book made me tear up, but this one had me fighting back emotions on the train. "Green Frog" perfectly captures the complexity and degrees of connection a family has to its homeland; family relationships; and one's relationship to the self. Some of the lines in these short stories left me breathless with a clarity of truth and an appreciation for how much grief and beauty life can hold at the same time. Definitely one of the best books I've read in a long time.
