It's completely unnecessary but not nearly as bad as I had feared. A classic 2 and a half stars would not recommend.

This was fine. I think the magic of the Hannibal books involves a case, a serial killer, an engaging agent and Hannibal taunting them. This backstory didn't feel incredibly needed though I enjoyed it enough. Sometimes complexity lies in shadows and shining a light on it makes it worse.

It was good. I just didn't understand some characters motives and reasons for doing certain things, especially regarding the police man and the stepmother was confusing at times too.

DNF, nothing like the first couple of books. Very boring and not interesting at all.
Oh Thomas Harris, you had such a great thing going here with this franchise. I loved Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. I think Hannibal Lecter is one of the most fascinating and intriguing fictional characters out there. So, this book is a huge disappointment. I didn't necessarily need a Hannibal Lecter origin story but even if I did did it have to be such a boring and cliche ridden one?
Seriously, does anything happen to young Hannibal that hasn't already happened to some other fictional characters. The story is also really boring. Nothing of actual excitement happens here. And nothing that happens really helps to explain the emergence of Hannibal the cannibal. It's just a muddled mess of a book that ruins the legacy of a great series and character. Harris should have quit while he was ahead. He took a great, menacing character and gave him a cliched boring origin story. So disappointing. A waste of my time and yours. I expected better from Harris. I really did.

Everyone said that this book was going to be disappointing and boring... they were more than right. Plot is fragile, characters are poorly developed and, generally, the story has no believability and lost all the mystery and the suspence that we find in the previous books.
Moreover, Thomas Harris, again, talks about things he doesn't know. It was barely acceptable in Hannibal, which was full of stereotypes about Tuscany and Italians, while this time the entire late WWII and post-war eras in Europe are described like a bad setting for a stupid Hollywood movie.
I think I would rather stick with the trilogy and forget about this book, so Hannibal Lecter, the educated and cool cannibal, will remain an extremely charming villain.
