“When I said that Mercy stood
Within the borders of the wood,
I meant the lenient beast with claws
And bloody swift-dispatching jaws.”
― Lawrence Spingarn
I will start this out with saying that this is the first Hannibal book I have read in the series. I only learned that it really should be read last after you actually get to meet Hannibal Lecter after getting through more than half of the novel. So take this as you will.
The scariest thing to most people is the unknown.
Which is why serial killers are so terrifying since most times it is only theories of what happened in their life to make them become what they are.
When I learned about Rising being about Hannibal's origin story... I was wary. I didn't want this book to ruin the rest in the series for me.
This story is very forgettable.
It is labeled "Horror" and "Thriller", yet I was never scared once or even on the edge of my seat. I was not bored reading it but it was more so mindlessly flipping through the pages until I reach the last one. Even as I am writing this, just finished reading, I can't remember any part that really stuck out to me that I could say I liked. The character felt like Harris was trying to make them complex and multi-dimensional... But they ended up flat and bland. Not caring for any of them or how they were really connected to Hannibal.
Perhaps my opinion of this will change after I finish the rest of the books but for now I wish I skipped this all together.
However I have heard great things for the rest of the books in this series so I have hopes they are much better than this and actually capture me in their story.

Harris, Thomas: Hannibal Rising (2006)
9½
- New Hannibal novel! And now of course in English since the translation hasn't arrived yet. Anyway, captivating story about Hannibals childhood and how he grew up with his demons. He seemed at the same time very human and yet monstrous. Well, as said, the "real" Hannibal died already in 1945. I liked this, it got my attention for over 24 hours but I didn't die of excitement. So. Good but the Red Dragon seemed better. And Hannibal. Good, still. Oh well.

For a thriller, and a well-known story at that, it didn't thrill me as expected.
A bit of a letdown, even writing-wise. It reads well but it doesn't grip you to the story or characters.

The only reason I stopped this was because it is so different from the vibe of the first 3 books. I'm not saying it's bad but I feel like maybe I would of finished it, if I read it first.
Will definitely try it again.

This made me annoyed because Hannibal's whole thing the first two books was that he was just evil with no explanation. He literally said "nothing happened to me, I happened." But a lot of shit happened to him in this that would make most anyone traumatized, if not a little evil.
I have loved this series very much. This story *could have been* good. The whole time I was reading it though, I kept feeling like the same passion to tell the story wasn’t behind it. Even during parts I found interesting, it felt like a chore. Well, did a little background checking to find that Harris was encouraged to write this because he was told if he didn’t get on Hannibal’s origin story somebody else would first.
