Very gripping. I was expecting something different but I really did like this book. I definitely feel differently about Hannibal now. Maybe, I will read the others some day. I have only seen the movies. I am passing this on to a friend from work that I ahve been trying to get to joing bookcrossing for ages.
Okay, I love the Hannibal mythos, but this? Was poo. I tuned out the minute I saw that the author had actually named his stereotypey-Japanese character "Murasaki Shikibu" and read the rest on autopilot. It felt like the Star Wars prequels, when Lucas tried to humanize Darth Vader. It didn't work then--we all just hated Anakin--and it doesn't work now.
quick straight to the point read. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series with the knowledge of his past.
As a standalone, this novel is excellent. It’s thrilling, fast-paced, and constantly challenges the reader with moral dilemmas. I read it as the first book in the series, knowing a bit about the character Hannibal Lecter from the movies. Interestingly, it’s hard to see the connection between the Hannibal portrayed here and the character he evolves into in subsequent books. The link between the two feels almost forced, as though it was tacked on at the end of the novel.
Since I haven’t yet read the other books in the series, I’m reviewing this one independently of them. Taken on its own, it deserves a solid rating for its gripping narrative and ability to keep readers engaged. It’s a great start for those diving into Harris’s chilling world, but it might not be so great for those already familiar with Lecter’s future persona.

The 1 star isn't out of literary criticism, although if that were the case, I'd give it 2 stars. I really disliked this book. It was ironically incredibly droll, even in its climax, which seemed to have been written very hastily. Many criticise the 3rd book Hannibal for unsatisfactory and divergent character choices, but this didn't feel anything remotely like Hannibal Lecter. Young Hannibal is deeply uninteresting and lacks any emerging fascinating and ugly complexities that defined Lecter in the previous books. Revenge is such a cheap motivator for a character who is arguably one of the most colossal literary figures in history. Also the constant fetishisation of Lady Murasaki, which occurs for the majority of the book, never failed to make me roll my eyes.
My least favorite of the series. It's not as propulsive and drags in spots. I found Lecter's backstory a bit unsatisfying
It was a super quick read but that doesn't mean it's compelling. It didn't solve anything in the way of how Hannibal became Hannibal but I mostly read it because it was the only one in the "series" I hadn't read. It'll be interesting to see how the TV show Hannibal treats Lady Muraksaki.
i am so bummed. i had such a spectacular time with 1 & 2, the gore, the psychology, the crimes, i devoured them. this book was the complete opposite. a chore to get through - such long and unnecessary filler writing about foods and weapons and a mustang and eels man & not near enough violence or other action to make up for how hard this book drug on and on and on.
it doesn’t make it any easier or better that nearly every single main character here, Paul, Hannibal, Mason etc etc just are horrible and soul sucks of individuals.
ALSO MAYBE ITS JUST ME BUT i’m RATHER UPSET BY THE ENDING.
i’m gonna read the fourth & final & pray i don’t hate it. may not even finish it.
