Reread. My husband gifted me this book for our first Christmas together in 2016; I remember feeling like it was a perfect choice for me but retained little of the plot (I guess I have read over 300 books since then).

The characters are sharp and the writing captivating, and having also read THE VANISHING HALF, I could see how much of Bennett's prose was already so well crafted in her debut. THE MOTHERS is smaller in scope than TVH but just as satisfying to read. Brit Bennett is probably my #1 must-read author.

What a fantastic read! I loved how invested I felt in the story. This brought me back to imagining how the characters looked in real life, imagining their town and their homes and how the stories came together.

Brit Bennett took on real topics and faced them in a very real way, and I truly appreciate the effort and research that that takes.

The only thing that gave me pause about the book is that it took me some time to realize which perspective we were reading from, who was the main focus of the book as a whole and that section of the story. After figuring that out, I think I really liked that small mental challenge, and that more unique style than most of the novels I read that spell it out or focus on a single character’s perspective.

3.5. Was kinda wack? But good enough for me to read quickly. Nuanced for sure

the writing was beautiful!

but the story felt unfinished. it seemed like none of the plot points were really resolved.
and I really disliked that Nadia was judged by everyone and their mother (ha!) and even herself on deciding on an abortion at seventeen years old.

I really enjoyed Nadia and Aubrey's friendship and how different they were from each other and yet so similar.

the dynamics between all of the characters made them three-dimensional and very real and I would've liked to read even further than just this slice that I, as the reader, was given.
