3.5 stars! there are two truly fantastic 5-star stories in this collection: “Community Life” and “What You Want To Do Fine.” the rest of them were either so-so or quite painful for me to get thru. also for some reason this collection starts out with its two weakest stories?

A witty and powerful collection of short stories, each focused on personal stories and mostly about people seeking their own form of redemption or deliverance. Some of the stories are absolutely brilliant, others just very good, but overall an excellent collection.

Good if a little repetitive in the last few stories.

Nothing like Lorrie Moore’s writing

The body has only so many weeks of stage fright in it before it simply gives up and just goes onstage.

Some stories were good, some were not. And I think there's an unwritten rule that ALL SHORT STORIES MUST BE GRIM. Which is why I don't read a lot of them.

One of the most devastating best short story collections I have ever read. I had to pace myself with these, because they were all so good, but also so affecting. Lorrie Moore all but redefines the genre with this book. I heavily dog-eared my borrowed copy (sorry) and actually dragged it out at the bar the other night saying, "listen, let me just read you this sentence." Sometimes I tried to read two stories in a go but that usually resulted in hugging the cat and asking doleful questions about the point of it all. Not for the faint of heart.

i really just couldn’t get into the book, i put it down like 3/4 the way through. characters were mid and the storylines just weren’t catching my attention. maybe i’ll try again at some point
