Slightly different from her previous Alphabet mysteries, but just as good!
Still a good book, but not my favourite Kinsey book. The flashback scenes were an interesting way to do it, but I felt there were potential killers that made more sense than the one who did it...
at first I didn't like that half of it took place in the past and half of it took place now, but in the end I loved it
I'm amending my review and downgrading this to 3 stars instead of 4. The ending is really irking me. Too many unanswered questions!! Gah!

This case takes Kinsey out of town, and I enjoyed the change of scenery. Sure, I miss Rosie and Henry and the local antics, but the story really came alive here, and the jumping between past and present was successful too. The only piece missing (and a big one... hello!) was the motive at the end. As usual, the epilogue was painfully short on details, so I'm left scratching my head. Still, one of my faves in this series.

Did I miss a chapter that would've explained the motive?? If an author makes me go back through the book to see if I missed a key point, then it's a problem. And why do the killing in the manner in which it was done? What's the explanation there??*******

I liked the way Sue tried something different with this book, but ultimately, I don't think the 3rd person scenes were all that relevant, tbh.
3.5 stars
When I first discovered Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone series there were only about eight books available. I pretty much binged those and then consistently read the new ones as soon as they were released. I got a little tired of the series and stopped reading after R.
When Grafton passed away and the series ended with book Y I decided that after 15 years it was time to pick up the series again and maybe finish off the final seven books. I'd never listened to the audio editions so I decided to go with audio for S.
I enjoyed Judy Kaye's narration. She feels like a good voice for Kinsey and I enjoy listening to her. I will probably finish the series with the audio editions.
It was easy to be comfortable in Kinsey's world and the internetless 1980's even after all these years.
This one deals with a mystery from 34 years earlier than that. Violet Sullivan disappeared in 1953 and now in 1987 her daughter hires Kinsey to see if she can find out what really happened. The chapters alternate between Kinsey's current investigation and flashbacks of what really happened in 1953.
It was fun to be back with Kinsey and I enjoyed the narrator. I figured out who did it somewhere in the 7th cd but it took three more cds for Kinsey to figure it out.

I've read this entire series, but sometimes I go back and re-listen to a random letter of the alphabet when my memory has faded enough to make the story feel just fresh enough. I read the blurb for S and was like, "I don't remember this one" and it took all of the first chapter and the description of Violet's kimono to start jogging my memory. It still took me some time to recall the baddie though.
I had forgotten how good this one was - mainly because as much as I do like the recurring secondary characters, Grafton had this habit of them taking up too much oxygen in the story. Kinsey is on the road here, so there's no Rosie or William (thank the Lord) and just a brief bit of Henry. Kinsey's investigation and POV is broken up with flashback chapters featuring the various players in the mystery and most of these were fine - but all of these folks are fairly odious and/or annoying so I was always relieved to get back to Kinsey chapters.
A stronger book in the series.

I very much enjoyed the format of this book, I love the changing perspectives and timelines and the way the story came together .... almost completely. Except!

I absolutely cannot figure out the killer's motive. Why did Tom kill Violet when he had the $65,000 already he stole from Cora? Why did he give Violet a dog? I suspected so many characters but honestly not Tom.
Good audiobook for doing chores around the house. I liked this one a bit better than the others, even though it's quite sad. Felt more like Agatha Christie than some of her other books.
