this book was beautifully written and honestly gave me a more optimistic view of life. i typically held the absurd view that life is a meaningless cycle, but this book allowed me to think less of the meaninglessness of life and rather how best to make meaning of a meaningless existence. the analysis was also extremely thought-provoking, and (cheesy as it is) opened my mind up to new realms of pondering and made our presence in this world seem much more important than it really is (even though he emphasizes that it's pretty much not!)

"There is no longer a single idea explaining everything, but an infinite number of essences giving a meaning to an infinite number of objects. The world comes to a stop, but also lights up."
"It is that divorce between the mind that desires and the world that disappoints, my nostalgia for unity, this fragmented universe and the contradiction that binds them together."
"Being deprived of hope is not despairing. The flames of earth are surely worth celestial perfume."

“Hope of another life one must ‘deserve’ or trickery of those who live, not for life itself, but for some great idea that will transcend it, refine it, give it a meaning, and betray it.”
“At the end of the awakening comes, in time, the consequence: suicide or recovery.”
“There is no sin without shadow, and it is essential to know the night.”
“But this time is ours and we cannot live hating ourselves”
Loved it and felt it emotionally in my soul especially the first few chapters

I started reading this book looking for something which, ultimately, I didn’t quite find. Camus would say - perhaps rightly - that that’s on me for having expectations (and implicitly, hope) in the first place. But nevertheless the fact remains that I didn’t love this book as much as I wanted to, despite the lucidity and beauty of Camus’ writing.
