It’s possible that I’m not in the right head-space right now to fully take in the story but I just didn’t seem to follow it very well. I enjoyed the art and would rate it higher for the art alone, but the story didn’t grab me and I found myself a bit lost in space tbh. Maybe I will revisit at a later date and be able to give it a proper rating, I really wanted to love it.

this book was STUNNING. absolutely amazing. i am glad i read this book as soon as i did, because i would be missing out if i let it sit on my to-read pile.

the story was amazing. i loved how it switched between the two timelines because that made the book really interesting and fast to read. i loved all of the unique, diverse characters that were focused on in this book (i think ell was my favorite). also, the ending was so fast-paced, suspenseful, and heartwarming.

i am jealous of the characters because the setting was SO COOL. a school in space? sign me up. fish spaceships? yes please. the staircase? fascinating and so creative. i was absolutely captivated by the space-exploration aspect of this book. (it was sort of like a doctor who episode)

lastly, the artwork. absolutely astonishing. i loved all the colors and all of the pretty backgrounds. i am in love with this book

i would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes doctor who, but wants a something a little bit different. Or, just to anyone who loves space, or future-y stuff, as well as to anyone looking for a book about love, family, and friendship. this is all-around a wonderful adventure, and i wish i could come up with better words to describe the awesomeness of this book. take my word for it - it's one of my favorite books i've read all year

This was beautifully illustrated, and while I overall love the story, the fact that Alma and Elliot have nearly the same hair make them difficult to tell apart in this art style. This was so annoying and happened so frequently that it brought down my rating, but this was still quite lovely.

Also did hate the trope of
"character who doesn't speak suddenly speaking," and while I understand it is probably just selective mutism to some degree, this is not explained so it felt off to me given how much of a point was made about respecting that they don't speak :/
