Overall, I really enjoyed the book. The world was fascinating and beautifully illustrated. It could have used a bit more world building because some of the issues in the world were a bit confusing. For example, gender in this world was not very well addressed. At first it appears that there is only one gender (all women), but one of the characters is non-binary which indicates then that there must be at least two genders. So where are the men (or whatever other gender exists)? What happened to them and why do they not appear at all in this book?
The plot was good but some of the minor conflicts between characters felt a bit shallow and were too easily resolved. Jules would get upset with Alma (her aunt who takes care of her), but then in they would immediately make up. The story would benefit from having some of these types of conflicts drawn out over a longer time period.
I was also very uncertain of Jules age. She appears to be around late teens, but she acts very childish, immature, and impulsive. She acts like a little kid and the other characters treat her as such. She was really obnoxious.
The use of fish as ships added a very magical and dream-like quality to the book. The dream-like feel was amplified by the use of mostly grey to shade the images and the only colors being used were mixtures of yellow and red.

I read it on kindle from the library, but I think I will have to get a hardcopy sometime to view the bewitching images.
