GORGEOUS ART??? SPACE GIRLFRIENDS??? WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE

OKAY okay, breathing. I'm so glad I finished this. So On a Sunbeam follows Mia, the newest crew member of a team that works to restore historical buildings on distant planets. In space. The story takes place over two different timelines: Mia's time in the crew, and Mia's past high school life with new-girl Grace, who she goes on to form a blossoming relationship with. The two timelines converge around the halfway point when we find out why Mia lost touch with Grace after barely spending a year together.

And this was just... really cute, okay. I love my smol queer space girls. The writing in this truly is phenomenal. This is definitely a quieter story—a good half of the chapters mostly serve to introduce us to the characters and the setting, as well as Mia's exploits in Cleary Academy. And I looooved every minute of it. I think comics are special in the way that they can really get you to stop and listen, how they can really immerse you in the world through the pacing and the art. And BOY, did this do just that. There was one chapter without ANY words at all, but that one chapter made my heart. So. Full.

I think a lot of this works because like, the art. God, the art.

Panel from Tillie Walden's On a Sunbeam. A young girl covers her face with her hands as koi-looking fishes swim through her body.

Aaaaand if you couldn't tell from my gushing already, I also really loved the characters. They basically carried the entire comic. All of them were so different and so real, which made their interactions really compelling to watch unfold, AND I got really invested really quick in their character development throughout the story. Hooboy, there was character development. Mia herself matures a lot throughout her journey, but there was a character moment towards the end (no spoilers!) where someone from the crew stood up for someone else with a goddamn badass mic-drop speech, and I just. I cannot tell you how willing I am to die for them. I also appreciated that this was an all-female world where lesbian wlw couples were commonplace!!! THE LADY GAYS ARE OUT HERE CONQUERING SPACE AND WE'RE THRIVIN.

(Ell is also definitely my favorite character.)

Panel from Tillie Walden's On a Sunbeam. A short-haired character holds up a note that reads

Definitely a five star read! I love comics! I really hope I can own the bound version some day! So many exclamation points!!! Okay bye.

Great comfort scifi graphic novel with heavy emphasis on character and world building. The kind of book that gives you warm fuzzies. Loved the completely female cast, strong messages about inclusivity and using the right pronouns, and the way the fish were spaceships. Also loved the art style of the buildings - gothic, nature-based rather than metallic and sleek, as sci fo tends to be. Minus one star for a bit of a rushed and fast paced ending - I think I would’ve liked to see more reconciling and conflict between the two main characters than there was.

So sweet

this graphic novel has a very pretty art style…
and that’s about it. the dialogue, the storyline? rough

i think it can be a cute read if you’re not expecting much.

very lovely, well woven plot, super cool dynamic characters, crazy atmosphere and environment, and an art style to die for.

Just couldn't quite get into this one. Art is absolutely gorgeous, but story and characters fall on the too young side of young adult for me. I could see myself giving it another go at a later time but my library hold is up and I have too many other books checked out right now that I'm more excited to read.

absolutely loved it 4.5/5
