Just couldn't quite get into this one. Art is absolutely gorgeous, but story and characters fall on the too young side of young adult for me. I could see myself giving it another go at a later time but my library hold is up and I have too many other books checked out right now that I'm more excited to read.

This tale is as much fantasy as it is sci-fi, if not more so. The way the buildings just exist in the vacuum of space without any explanation of how; the way ships look like (and move like) fish; and the creatures from The Staircase ...
Mia tends to be late to things (a recurring trait seen as a flaw, that comes up a lot), but she is also bild and headstrong. As a youth it got her in trouble but it proves to be a strength as an adult. She falls in love as a freshmen at the academy and never forgets it. Years later, her story weaves and mends with that of other people allowing her to grow up and learn what she can achieve, despite grades saying she isn't much. She learns to fight for what she believes in and what she wants out of life. Even the vastness of space cannot stop her when she focuses. Sometimes other people suffer because of her determination, but it ends up being alright because they love her and she loves them; a big, chosen family willing to do whatever it takes to help one another. The ends justifies the means kind of peeks and its tough for me to go along so willingly, because Mia never endures consequences of her actions. There is even a moment when she was like, "yeah, I lost someone but I was fine afterward" We don't get to see how she deals with loss, unless we read between the lines and pay attention to her ultimate goal. Mia will get what she wants, regardless of what needs to happen.

I love graphic novels because you can convey so much through the art. On a sunbeam was so beautifully created and the story was so amazing too. 100% worth the wait!!!
