This was quite the space adventure epic! It took me a little while to get into, but I ended up enjoying this a lot. It's a true friend gang adventure, and I thought Walden handled the extensive backstories, world-building, and dramatic tension really well. I especially loved
The Staircase planet/system, the family that ruled that space, and the rugged, austere beauty there. Even though I was intitially intimidated by this book's length, everything about The Staircase could have been even longer, honestly.
This was a perfect escapist story, set in a time and place I had to fully dive into with no prior context or familiarity. I don't often do that these days, so it was fun to find that here. I love Walden's art, and perhaps the only thing that could have enhanced this experience was reading this in some sort of oversize, giant book format so I could appreciate the detail and beauty of her artwork even more closely. Maybe I'm old now and just have bad eyes. Great book, though!

This book took me on an adventure through long forgotten emotions, yet undiscovered happinesses, and endlessly hopeful philosophies.

Walden is untouchable. Their storytelling and artistic ability are unparalleled. This book was such a joy, an honor, to read. It was visually stunning on every single page. There was not a single part of it that seemed to be an afterthought or a filler. It is a remarkable book. I already look forward to re-reading it.

wow wow wow so pretty
okay five stars cuz this book was perfect for me. the formatting was a bit weird in the printed version i read, but when i went online to see the webcomic, it was much much better.
will say that i read this past 9:00, meaning that my brain could not translate anything going on here and could not form comprehensive thoughts. i'm probably going to buy my own copy (or something) and re-read so that i can write a better review.

I found this really hard to read, although the emotional beats were good and I teared up. But the art was muddy to me -- I had a really time distinguishing characters a lot of the time -- and the pacing was all kinds of off, in ways that make the webcomic origin uncomfortably clear. The world building is largely laughable and sometimes nonsensical, which was another ding. But I am sure I have students who will be all in for the feels and the fact that this is a queer (women only) world filled with women who are strong and kind and racially diverse, even if it's sort of confusing that Elliot is nonbinary in a seemingly unary world.

What is not to love about this beautiful book. Rarely do you see sci-fi which such incredible world building that was entirely unique. I was so invested in all the characters and the romance of it all. Anyone who says they can't find as many WLW queer lit as MLM needs to put this on the top of their list ASAP.
