So cute and wholesome

As a mid-30’s girl, I was soooooooo pleasantly surprised to read main characters in their 30’s!!!!!! Bumbling awkward lost adults my beloved

I went into this with some prejudice bc I'm not really a romance reader. It was a good read, really funny at times, but my bias was partially correct: I wish there'd have been more about the political intrigues and mysteries and assassinations etc, which, while being interestingly set up, felt only like an afterthought to the romance, when, at least in my preference, the romance should have been an afterthought.

The inner voice paragraphs of the two protagonists with all their self doubting and self hating were, frankly, annoying. We all love complex characters who have to overcome trauma, but after a while it just felt repetitive. The book could've worked without it, especially given that Kingfisher's writing style is otherwise solid.

(Priest Beartongue is the funniest and coolest superior ever, we stan her)

Look, I didn't know I needed a romantic MMC whose internal monologue is a constant, polite panic attack about possibly trampling small flowers or offending someone, but apparently I did. And the love FMC?
She’s out here just hustling to pay rent by mixing perfumes, trying to avoid her ex and you know, decapitations. Relatable.

The book is like a warm hug that occasionally gets interrupted by someone being dismembered. It’s sweet, genuinely funny, and the characters feel like real people you’d want to have a drink with (as long as you promise not to talk about the terrible thing that happened to the last god). The banter is top tier. I found myself laughing out loud.

Why not five stars? I guess I wanted a tiny bit more mystery, and sometimes the pacing just kind of meandered along. But honestly, that’s me nitpicking. It was a charming, and slightly gruesome comfort read. I’ll definitely be picking up the next one.
